I'm thinkin I'm going to enter the Buttstomper, but my little mini is without lights. I've run races with mag lights duct taped to my fender, and helmet, but I'm wondering what the world has come up with? I'll buy batteries to get it thru the night, but a stator at this point is too late. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

If you have the cash, I'd go with some helmet lights by trailtech or cyclops with an extra battery. If you know anybody that has one or 2, borrow them as it will definitely help you much better than mag lights.

get the Cyclops Solstice, it's awesome. I bet they will hook you up with keeping a charged battery the entire race.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that somebody out there could fabricate a universal round/oval/square plastic number plate with headlamp built in, and a battery pack/on/off switch attached to the back. Panduit that thing to the front of any bike and go....in fact, with that battery they should drive an odometer/clock/enduro computer. Seems like it could be done on the cheap and sold to many for a profit? Is there something out there? Am I just uninformed...again :)

Darryl will be there I'm sure. He and Cyclops are great supporters of offroad riding and are at all the night events providing battery charging support, etc. I have the Solstice myself and like Trav says it is awesome.

Have any problem with it being on top of your head? Overhanging trees? Is it bash-able? It's kinda spendy, will it be ok as my sole source of light at Rieter?

I'm not a Reiter junky, and I was getting lost on wednesday trying to follow the trail in the daylight. I'd even suggest some more arrows. At night, without some real light, I will be reliving my worst nightmare at Reiter. I broke down way up high, all by myself one afternoon, and had to walk out through the night. NOT COOL is about all I have to say, and oh yeah, much thanks to the two 'deliverance lookin' fellows that turned out to be pretty cool. Scared the doodoo outta me at first though.

This guy is usually hanging around Reiter ready to lend a hand...

The Solstice is built pretty sturdy and with the duo-lock (monster velcro!) used to mount it to your helmet there is no way it is coming off. I have never smacked it into a tree so I can't give a report on how it held up...but the quality of construction is very high.

believe your bike has electric start and if it does you already have power. I just set up my neighbor kid's TTR 125 with a very cheap set of helmet lights powered by the bikes stator.

I hooked the lights up straight to the battery which will still power the lights f he stalls the motor. I did some testing and the TTR would not power a 50 watt bulb without drainng the battery so I went with two 20 watt bulbs. These still will slowly be a drain on the battery but he ran for about an hour and the battery lost 1.5 volts. If he has to he can drop down to one light for a bit until the bike charges the battery again. There charging system is seperate from the power for the ignition so the low voltage on the battery side will not kill the bike. Make sure you have a fuse just after your connections to the battery incase of an electrical short. Also make sure the connection is a break awya style incase you and the bike become seperated it will not pull out your wiring. I used a flat 2 way trailer connecter and do not plug it all of the way in so it will come apart easily.

For the lights I use 12 volt accent lights, they are the same bulb that the Cyclops halogen light use. They come in 50, 35 and 20 watt version and you can get either spot or flood patterns. You can get these at any Lowes or Home Depot store for about three bucks each. I mount them in a 1 1/2 inch PVC coupling with plug in the end. You have to "route" out the end of the coupling for the bulb to sit in it and then silicone it in place. I drill hle in the PVC to let the heat out. I used a break away clamp to mount the lights on the sides of his helmet. I have also used "Superlock" velcro fom Radio Shack that works very well for mounting hte light to the helmet.

I can't insert pictures of the lights but I will PM themm to you. If anyone else want to see them PM me before I will at about 3pm today.

I will be up there helping out a 15 and under team, I was going to do the by myself again this year but tore ligaments in my wrist at Hannegan and will be having surgery this Monday so I will be their pit boss.

If you need help out there look me up and I will see if I can help.

Have fun this is a great event and the Stump Jumpers do a great job.

I've done the buttstomper several time and by night the course will be burned in so well you don't need arrows.

if you go with the cyclops solstice helmet light you will prob see better at night than during the day. seriously! it's that good

also, the checkpoint crews are helpful. one year I had a split radiator hose and had limped my bike for about 2-3 miles including up banshee trail with it knocking and wanting to seize. pulled into "tony's check", drove right into the middle of the crowd asking for a cell phone to call down to my team, somebody asked me what was wrong and I explained my split radiator hose... before I could say anything more there was a crew working on my bike. in 15 minutes my bike was fixed, filled with water, and I never even had to get off the bike. it was great, made me feel like a pro :applause:

it's no doubt a very tough race, but also a very rewarding race with experiences like this.

nope, not the little KLX125...the KLX450R does, but it's a beast for me to lug around Reiter for 24hrs.

Last year we set up the kids on bikes that did not have the capabilty to power a light with sealed motorcycle batteries that they carried in a fanny pack. They got about two hours of run time on a battery and the batteries were not that expensive. Call Jeff Tasky at Tasky's Cycle, he will know what batteries we used. I believe he bought them from Battteries Plus in Everett.

I'll second how strong the velcro is after trying to get the light off Wiz's helmet with his head still in it...sucker wouldn't come off after shaking his head around several times.
