This is your chance to voice your opinion and guide the development of the Yacolt Burn (Jones Creek).
These maps are not all that great and I should be getting PDF files soon from DNR.

The Department of Natural Resources is developing a ten-year Recreation
Plan for the western Yacolt Burn State Forest, a 41,000-acre forest
block located in southwest Washington. We are in the process of
gathering suggestions for improving recreation and public access. This
survey will help determine how recreation users and visitors currently
use the forest. This survey will take no more than 10 minutes to
fill-out.

Joe......

So far 310 people have taken the time to do the survey. At this time ORV users are the majority but not by much. The horse riders are just a few behind us. Only 110 ORV users have taken the time. If we are not represented with large numbers in this survey we will not get the trail miles added or new facilities but the horse users may. Please take the time to fill out the survey no matter where you live.
Thanks,
Joe.........

At our next JCTRA club meeting I will be bringing some new maps. One is the results of the DNR trail inventory and the other is the proposed new facilities. The trail inventory is missing a lot of trails that I know are there, of note the 4 corners area. Sadly, if a trail is not on the inventory it will not be considered or looked at as a possible sanctioned trail. The point of bringing the map to the club meeting is we can draw in trails we know are there. Also, we can send in GPS files. I do not have all the hard number with me at the moment but around 200 miles of trails were inventoried. Facilities that ORV users care about is a staging area and campground at 4 corners, a staging area at the entrance to Cold Creek campground where Ross' and waterbar meet, Expanding the Jones Creek staging area,m. Facilities that do not concern ORV users are expanded Tarbell trail head, a staging area for mountain bikers by the Larch repeater station, a horse staging area close to the 1200 road on the east side of the planning area.
There will only be 3 facilities approved to be built or improved due to DNR funding. You can count on the fact that the facilities that get approved will be for the user groups that are represented the most in the survey. Also, more trail miles are a given because every user group wants that but if you want to see any singletrack it has to be pointed out in the survey.
Oh ya, I forgot about the 3rd map. I have a dream trails map. People can draw a desired trail wherever they want it to go;)
I do know trail miles sanctioned will depend on the effort put in at work parties. DNR does not have the time, money, manpower, or resources to maintain 200 miles of ORV trails in the Yacolt Burn. In short, they depend on JCTRA an other orgs to help out. If you were DNR would you be willing to approve 200 miles of sanctioned ORV trails given the volunteer hours put in? Here is a link to our hours from the start of our current grant: http://www.jctra.org...ork%20Party.xls Don't get me wrong, I'm not wanking about people putting in. My point is we all have to be realistic: we can't expect to get 10 times the miles of sanctioned trails if we do not have the people to help take care of it.
Thanks to everyone taking the time to fill out the survey!

Joe..........

great info  sounds like you guys are really on top of this. Thanks again for all you do for this sport. I think it's as you say, unless more people get involved there is no way the riding areas will be expanded. I'm going to try to make it to the next meeting. It would be cool to see those maps. And I think my annual dues are due anyway. :ride:

Western Yacolt Burn Recreation Plan:

Recreation Survey Highlights
As of July 14, 2008, 310 people have completed the Western Yacolt Burn Recreation Survey either on-line or by returning a survey in the mail. When asked to list all the types of recreation each respondent participates within the forest, camping is at the top with 51 percent. Camping is a popular activity enjoyed across the various recreation types. Other activities that followed with at least 30 percent included horseback riding, hiking, motorcycling, nature observation and mountain biking. ATV, fishing, picnicking, pleasure driving and target shooting each within the 20 percent range.

Primary activity: Of the 310 respondent, 110 individuals stated motorcycling/ATV was their primary activity, followed closely by 102 respondents stating horseback riding as their primary recreation activity. Fifty-five people checked mountain biking as their primary activity.

Frequency of use and driving distance: Over 35 percent of respondents visit the forest monthly, followed closely by 32 percent who visit the forest on a weekly basis. Most respondents, over 75 percent, live one hour of less away from Western Yacolt Burn.

Type of camping equipment: Car camping received the greatest response with 55 percent of those who responded as camping in the forest. Truck camper and fifth wheel/trailer both received 23 percent, while motorhome/RV received 12 percent.

Greatest concerns: Survey respondents’ greatest concern when recreating in the forest were: Limited number of trail miles (70 percent), Garbage dumping (51 percent), limited connector/loop miles (51 percent), Maintenance of trails (46 percent) and Access to information such as maps, postings, information board (45 percent).

Willingness to pay: Two-thirds of those asked are willing to pay a fee between approximately $5-10.00 per visit.
