Crusty1 wanted me to ask y'all about if more trails are open at Brown's Camp. He hasn't wanted to go in the last few years since a lot of stuff was closed for logging sales. We'll be there next Thursday with some other TTers(maybe longer for us). Hopefully Crusty1 will not have to defuse drunks waving guns at each other again:crazy:

Is there a link that lists closed trails? that would be a lot easier to plan loops than riding around finding closed trails

Here ya go.... http://www.oregon.go...trail_rpt.shtml

Rock Quarry at Brown's is closed, so there shouldn't be too many shooters (in one area at least).

Fire restrictions were being posted last Sunday as we were headed out. Riding is still open it looks like, campfires only in designated campsites (inside the staging area campsites).

closed, closed, closed... sux. 10-20 years ago this used to be a epic single track ride area, now just a 4wd park.

Browns/Rogers area just sucks! I had not been there for a year so I checked it our recently to see if it was any better. It somehow got worse. Many of the trails were closed for logging or had already been logged and are now roads. Most of the trails that were open were three feet wide and covered with 18 inches of loose rock. That area is so close I wish it was half way decent but it is just horrible.

The link posted above does not give the full picture of closures. For example I tried to ride Back and Back (past the horse camp) a couple weeks ago. There were no trail closure signs (and it is not on the ODF list of closures) but the loggers seem to have decided to fall trees across the trailheads anyway.

I would suggest driving to Ben Smith, Diamond Mill, or Jordan. Those areas are far from perfect but not nearly as bad as Rogers.

Hey PP, if there's better trails to hit while we are there, the kid and I are game.

Anyone want to show an old lady around on Saturday?

The kid and I were slated to race Washougal but he's out with no ACL and a bone bruise so I bagged it too.

We are still heading over to Portland Wed and plan to ride with Plushpuppy Thursday, I have a meeting all day Friday in Portland but would like to ride somewhere Saturday. Heading to the Nationals Sunday with the old man & kids.

I like good goattrails, tight singletrack and some good hillclimbs to clean the 5hunny out on. I'm not real speedy or real slow, I'm usually the slow guy (gal) in the advanced or fast group around here. The kid is speedy as hell on trails, at least in my perspective but he'll probably be hanging out pitting for his buddies at Amateur Days both Friday and Saturday.

If they are super secret trails, don't worry, I never tell and wouldn't be a frequent visitor.

SO what about Sidewinder, Military, Chute, Cedar, C-line, Elmer's, Hoodraiser, stick-up-the-butt(just kidding)?? are those open? (that's what I can remember off the top of my head). What trails have the poker runs been using?

SO what's wrong with 18" of rock??? that's always been out there:D

thanks for the info!

PP, I will be there on Friday morning with my oldest daughter before all the idiots come out for the weekend. I'm trying to get her to ride a little more, but people make her nervous, so we are leaving everyone else at home for a few hours. Are you camping or just going to be there on Thursday? I am leaving my big bike at home and riding the 50's.

We camped at Browns this weekend, for the Poker Run, and it was really busy. Way too many people, but most of them just hang around the campground so if you go a little further out of the way there are trails minus all the traffic.

All the trails you mentioned are open.

Stick in the Nose (if that is what you're refering to) is all the way out on the Jordan Creek side. Which you can ride to from Clown's via Archer's and down Chain Breaker or Buzzard's Point. Not 100% sure that it is open (I didn't actually read the link I sent you.). Then apparently a lot of guys are riding back up Marvelous Mainline the wrong way.

We hit Diamond Mill a couple weeks ago, and if you are looking for more technical-single track riding you might consider staging there...

Ride report.... http://www.thumperta...532989&page=619 .

As far as the trail condition and repairs that have been going on around Clown's Camp... from what I've seen the people doing the repairs on the trails hardly use them as they have tons of stash single track in close proximety. So, their goal is just to keep them open and prevent severe errosion and rutting... which the larger rock does quite well. I prefer that crappy rock over using pavers or blocks everywhere... not trying to go ride around on a sidewalk. I don't complain about it too much, knowing ahead of time that I'm going to Brown's or Roger's and don't set my expectation very high. And since I don't contribute as much as I should... I'm just glad that somebody is out there doing it.

Traffic in that area can be pretty bad, but if you are there during the weekdays... the trails are still pretty fun IMO.

Yeah, 20 years ago it was much better up there. But, as population pushes further out so does the first place you can stop to ride or wheel. Back in the day, everybody who was just out to tear it up, get smashed and wheel around only had to go as far as Mountaindale, Timber, or Gales Creek (among others).

Note: I could also, during that era, ride a dirtbike from where I lived near the Hillsboro Airport to Brown's Camp without hitting pavement except to cross it here and there... it would involve quite a bit of riding through fields but was totally doable... no more as our population grows and pushes further out.

Stick in the Nose, wow, your trails sound as goofy as ours at home do!

Sounds like there's plenty of trails to choose from at Brown's and it is a week day! Woohoo!

For a more challenging and mostly single track loop here is one I like.

From Keening creek go up Musulia(sp?) Creek trail .
That will take you to Cedar something (I think Cedar Fence). This can be a hard winter climb but is not bad at all in the summer and someone has “sanitized much of it.
Take that all the way up to ride some steep stuff around Wolf Point.
Take Frankenstein all the way then go past the hiking trail head.
Take the dirt road and hit the on-offs to head towards Reads Ridge South.
Take a nice unofficial trail to Reeds Ridge South if you know where it is.
Take Reads Ridge South as far as you can then the road to Cut Off.
From here you are close to Musulia Creek.

This is really only half a days ride so you can make the loop longer by using Old Cedar Creek to hit Diamond Mill. It comes out right above the hiking trail. Mongos will also do the trick. Do note that, typical of the TSF, most of the trails mentioned above are officially closed. I can not think of any loop to do that does not involve closed trails though, that is just how the reality of the trail situation.

thanks rooster, great ride report, looks like you had fun!!!!

nwet--thanks for the loop, is that more by Jordan creek side, or Diamond Mill?

well, I'll be sure to give y'all a ride report, we haven't been to Brown's Camp for a few years, it will be interesting to see how it is. Perhaps the most "disturbing" was the hippy forest rangers "patrolling"?

SO, we'll be there Wednesday night through Saturday or so, come say hi if you're there, we're in a old buff trailer with a homemade diamond plate ramp door on the side so we can put the bikes in the trailer, we pull with a tan Suburban. Two Yamahas, two KTMs. Heh, we'll ride with anyone who lets us.

I was at Jordan's 2 weeks ago and Stick in the Nose was closed. Actually, whatever trail leads to SitN from the valley was closed.

NWetRider posted a good loop. I've done that ride with him before and it was fun and challenging, especially in the winter. The climb right out of Keening was a good one!

Just read the link I sent, copy/paste from page....

# 37 Stick In The Nose is closed indefinitely due to timber sale activity.

It does suck that our trails get closed due to timber activity. It is the same for the jeepers, noboby likes it but we all must remember we wouldnt have the riding opportunities that we do if is want for the logging activities that this forest was here for.

a side note though, it wouldbe nice if they tried a little harder to maintain the integrety of the trails when they do log on them.

Well, it looks like we are gonna be down at Browns Camp tomorrow (monday) sometime later in the day or tuesday (haven't figured it out yet) and ride for a few days.

We'll be in a BIG 40ft RV pulling a 12ft silver box trailer. We ride hondas and have 2 labs. Say hi if you're there.
