seat height

Recommended Posts

38.6 to 38.9 is what I've always been told/read.

There are so many threads on this site regarding lowering bikes, I just don't understand why the makers of these machines don't realise it is a problem for quite a lot of people and produce a good bike that fills this gap in the market as most people i know are not interested in the likes of the crf230 etc

I was told a few years ago that a 5'10" rider in boots is the height the manufacturers design bikes around. Even that's not tall enough if you get in some tight, gnarly technical situations!

Fancy getting myself one of these untill i read the seat height was 39" which in my book is seriously tall, is this the genuine height? if it is what can i get it down to sensibly?

Yes... its tall, as are many dirt bikes. I had mine lowered about an inch and a half and I notice it hitting many more rocks on the bottom. Its better because I can get both feet down But I definitely notice the 1.5 inches that are now missing.

But how come Sherco make their enduro range with a 35.5" seat height. I know they are a bit rare over there but the 250 is supposed to be a better bike than the KTM 250 which is the bike of choice for many racers over here???

Without knowing if you had your suspension lowered internally or if you have a lowering link, presumably you have a lowering link with a decrease in leverage due to pivot placement based on the "notice the 1.5 inches that are now missing."

A lowering link with an increase in leverage will actually give your bike more travel because the rear wheel is able to travel further up in to its arc.

pivot placement, leverage, arcs???? I wasn't thinking in those terms.

I had it lowered internally.

when I say I notice it... what I mean is that I bang the skid plate against the rocks more.

I am battle getting both feet to the ground comfortably but over the years have just learnt to move your butt to the side and put one foot down.(sort of a straddle). Or cut your seat foam down a bit.The WR foam is so hard you only compress a small amount when sitting.?

I had my bike lowered professionally.... But as I get better, I am realizing that the best remedy to a tall bike is to do the following:

1. keep moving

2. don't stop in places where you can't get a foot down.

3. stand up more, it will help you keep moving when things get hairy

4. if you can't stand, then put more weight on your feet than on your but.

5. carry more momentum. The things that bounce you around on the trail are much less likely to do so with more momentum and speed.

btw... I cut my seat down a bit, but that's a bad idea for a yamaha. That is one hard lump to sit on.
