Hey Guys,

I've got a relatively stock 400 and am interested in doing some mods. I find the gearing is a little lame in steep terrain, having to go from 1st to 2nd always seems necessary. Can anyone tell me what the best sprocket config should be for not having to change gears when you're in the gnarly.

Any other easy mod advise would be appreciated.

thanks

You have an S or an E model?

And you're saying the gear is too tall or too steep? Meaning you'd rather be able to stay in 2nd, or you'd rather be able to stay in first?

exactly i82, i use 14/47 (E gearing) so far a pretty good for 80%/20% off/onroad, on my DRZ S.

Check out TT's search, don't like TT's, use google, it will bring you back to a TT thread ....:applause:

Go 14/47 if you aren't doing much/any street riding otherwise, 14/44 is ok for light street and more offroad.

sorry for the slight hi-jack, I'm new to this site too and i just bought a new 07 drz400s. I'm pretty sure the stock gearing is 15/44. Would keeping the front at 15, but going to a 47 in the rear be beneficial? For street use I drive it to work roughly 7 miles and and run errands, but I really don't do more that 50 mph. I want to change grears for offroad use.

I agree with the above guys, if you want serious offroad gearing 14/47 is a good choice. You can still do some street but its going to be revving pretty good at 70.

If you want a decent comprimise, I really like the 14/44 setup I'm running now.

It is cheaper to buy a 14 for the front plus it is a great time to do the loctite fix on the splines. I don't go on the freeway with mine so I run 14/44 on the wheels with the DW's mounted and 14/47 for the wheels with knobbies. On my bike the stock chain can be used from 15/44 to 14/47

How much of a difference does going to a 14 front make? Would a 13 front still be pretty useable on the street? I spend very little time on the freeway, but enjoy being able to rip away from cagers that aren't paying attention.

14t is a big difference from a 15. It would be better than a 13 for the road for sure. I wouldn't take it out on any open strech with a 13, but 14/44 is decent for short road riding.

some times you just have to try difernt gearing to see if you like it

it is cheeper to swap out the CS sprocket and most of the time the chain will will do

with the rear sprocket you run the chans that the chain will need shortoned or linthoned

I have a SM with a 17 inch wheel so stock was 15-41 buy going with 16-41 the motor is not screeming at 70MPH ( this bike is 90% on road ) if I was looking to do more stunting/wheelys I would try 14-41

Just an FYI - 13/44 and 14/47 are basically the 'same' gearing. I wouldn't do any long stints on a highway with it, but you can certainly go from trail to trail with it.

Thanks for the feedback. I ordered a 14t front sprocket last night and may order a 13t for when I know I'll be going trail riding.
Excited to get the 14t on the bike. Nothing wakes a vehicle up like aggressive gearing!

okay, thanks for all the advise. I'm going with one tooth less in the front for starters and testing that out. So stock is 15-44 and I'm doing 14-44.

Stay tuned, I'll let you know what I think...?

Now what about that 3 inch hole in the airbox, does it really make that much difference. I've jetted and done some holes in the pipe so far.

Do a search on 3x3. Here's a link to the 3x3 master post to get you started.

Gearing is basicly a simple math thing.
If stock is 15/44 then the countershaft turns 2.93 times for each turn of the rear tire.
If you drop the front sprocket to a 14 tooth you now have a 14/44 ratio. 3.14 turns on the counter shaft.
That is a difference of 9.3%! Huge difference!
That lowers your top speed by 9.3% . But it puts 9.3% more power to your rear wheel!!!
What is the top end that you need?

Well... the theoretical top speed if you could redline in high gear with the taller gearing.. which we can't do.

It is not important to discount the theoretical, because the estimate is given in a percentage. It doesn't matter if the real world is off by 1,2,3,4 percent, It gives a relative expectation.
I myself have tried these ratios and am not speaking in purely theoretical terms.

If you're not doing highway, 14/47 is not only good in the woods, but alot of fun around town, too!

Well, I've had the 14t on the front for about a week now. I really don't notice any difference in the bike's pep at all. I was worried the thing would want to pick up the front tire every time I throttle it, but not at all. Maybe I'll try the 13t
