Is there a rule of thumb that you should go by when changing gearing on how many links to take out to how many teeth you change? Thanks.

Each tooth added or subtracted should move the axle half of half the change in sprocket circumference. The pitch of a 520 chain is 5/8", so if you go one tooth smaller, the circumference of the sprocket decreases by 5/8". The chain runs over half the circumference, so the path of the chain is shortened by 5/16". Since there are two runs of chain, the axle must move half of that, 5/32", to make up the difference.
