Am trying to work on my bike and have some basic questions. Some may have been posted herein but couldnt find them.

My carb leaks from the bowl. I pulled the float and adjusted it somewhat but it didn't seem out of adjustment. I was told to look at the value that actually is depressed by the float; it appears fine and unworn. The bike is a KLX 400 from 2003. Do I just replace the value with a new one and try that or is there something else to look at? Also, I live at 7,000 feet and am wondering if changing the jet will give it some extra umph. When I pull the float bowl there seems to be a jet right there with a number 142 on it. Is that my main jet? If I'm at 7,000 feet I would think I would be running rich. Is that a correct assumption and if so, what jet would I switch to?

Thanks so much.

leaking from the bowl would probly be the gasket, or you drain screw or your fuel screw, or you didnt tighten the bolts all the way

if the float bowl leaks replace the gasket.if fuel leaks into the engine you'll need a new float needle and seat assembly.

yeah that's your main jet if it's the stock mikuni bsr36 carb.

if you want extra oomph get the james dean jds005 jetting kit and do the 3x3 airbox mod.

as for your 7000 ft altitude, yes you would be rich on the 142 main jet.you would be better off starting out with like a 132 main jet for the stock jetting.

james dean will recommend his own jetting for high altitude with his kit or you could ask eddie our moderator and jetting expert in the jetting forum.
