Hi, I'm pretty new to motorcycles and currently looking to get a dual sport. Saw this in a list of mods on craigs list (2005 DRZ400S): "regeared w/ stock rear sprocket drop 2 tooth drive sprocket." Any help is appreciated.

that means he went with a smaller sprocket in the front (2 teeth under stock) this would give the bike a more torque feel such as be able to power wheely and get off the line faster ..(shorten the gears)

If you add teeth to the rear sprocket it is the same thing as dropping teeth from the front sprocket , i think -2 in the front is equal to+5 in the rear but i might be off a little on that

that means the owner replased the counter shaft ( the output shaft of the traney with the smaller sprocket )

stock would be 15 tooth sprocket so now he has a 13 tooth

this just means it is easyer to do wheelys and will be over revving the motor at 70 or so MPH

so if your looking to do much 60 to 65 MPH runing you will need to replace that sprocket with the 15 tooth one

I agree with above two and guess it means

rear sprocket: stock
front (driving) sprocket: 2 teeth down

Wow, this forum is great. Thanks for the replies! Sounds like I would want to go back to the stock set up.

Depends on the riding that you do.
For my street set up I use 14/44
For dirt I'm using 14/48

-1 on the front is closer to +3 on the back but a gear ratio chart will tell you exactly. You can search "Gear Ratio" in the DRZ forum if you're intersted, It hass been posted before. Did you buy the bike?

Havn't looked at the bike yet. About 70 miles away, will see if it's still around by the weekend. Thanks for the replies.
