KX 250 vs KDX 200-220

Recommended Posts

currently on a kx 250, aftermarket pipe and reeds.

im 15, 5'8, and weigh 115.

i LOVE my kx 250, i love being able to pull the wheel up whenever i want,

i love being able to throw the back end loose, i love accidently giving it to much throttle,

but sometimes i think,

do i want a 4 stroke.....naaaaaaaw, to expensive, not good enough throttle response unless its a 250f. which i dont have the money for.

or do i want a smaller 2 stroke?

DEFINATELY not a 125 MXer but a 200 or 220 since all i ride is trails.

but i need convincing

im not going to grow out of my current bike, but will i the kdx?

how much power am i loosing?

and am i gonna miss my current cocaine bike??

people....just convince me to keep my kx 250 or get a kdx

let me suggest two things first is the G2 throttle cam system helps with the tight stuff in controlling the throttle, the second is the auto clutch I love my bike it is set up with both and the power is still there when I need it but the first part is less abrasive with more torque I can twist it from Idle in third coming out of corners and over rocks and logs with out worry of a the powerband spike.

I'd say keep the 250. The KDX is as big as the 250 just a smaller frame and maybe an inch shorter? The engine will seem sort of tame stock but you can do a lot of things to it and make them scream.

what is it that you want out of your bike?

If you want an easyer riding trail bike, with out loosing the power and handling of the KX you can do that with little cash out in comparing what you would loose buying a KDX and not being happy with it.

start buy having the suspension tuned (re valved) for your type riding, then work on getting the power under control

(I like the gnarly pipe, loads of torque, 13/50 gearing, with the auto clutch, no more clutch mistakes,18 rear wheel so I can run 9-11 psi for more traction, the G2 throttle cam with the 500 cam in most of the time 22% less pull, keeps the mistaken throttle blips

from happening.) You may very well ride past the stock KDX's ability, but you won't take the KX past its.

I will tell you this If you try to fly through a root or rock laden turn with trees on both sides while standing with one foot on the peg and nothing but the front wheel on the ground thinking boy this is gona hurt! the KX will pull it off and leave you at the next turn awaiting more input before you thought you should even be there. With the KDX it can happen just a little slower with both wheels on the ground and your butt in the seat.

I ride with mostly orange bikes I have tried the new 250 XC, 300 XCWE with the auto clutch.

I was thinking about moving in that direction untill I got every thing line up on my KX.

The biggest issue with my KX is I like it so much I cant find a reason to buy a new anything.

Im a 45 year old has been B rider at 5'5 165lbs

What Krazyinski said for mods to your 250. If that doesn't work you could do a late model YZ125 or RM125 though I hear the YZ has a more versatile engine. An auto-clutch on my 250 smoker has prevented the purchase (and interest) of an F bike.

a 125 is to gutless for serious trail raiding imho

That's what I thought until I rode a 2006 YZ125. I believe the HP is somewhere near the mid 30s which is amazing and it is spread over a broad range for a 125. I like it but I also like never being able to find the limits of my 250 in the tight trails too.?

You're probably like me with your 250. You want to avoid whiskey throttle. I've found that it works best not to have a Wiseco piston. It revved too fast and free and resulted into instant throttle snap as in launch into tree right NOW. That's even with the FWW. I'm sure a G2 throttle cam would also help.

I was set on the idea of changing bikes next year, and going orange,I would get some real wrist pain from having to open close the throttle. then I put the 500 cam on the G2 and it solved all my snap happy throttle problems. I like to twist with out being launched to the mooon!! the 05 motor is just like that in stock form set up to launch from corner to jump. The 500 does not come in the kit I had to order it straight from G2.

Thanks for posting this. I've been considering selling my 00 KX250 and getting something more oriented for trail riding like a KDX or CRF-X, since that is all I really do. The KX is a load of fun on open trails. But, while riding singletrack I'm dead tired after 2 hours between the suspension (stock) and holding on to all that power.

I'm torn between spending more money on the bike and not getting something I'm happy with vs. selling it and regretting it.

Current mods: skid plate, 9oz FWW, radiator guards, cycra pro bends. Sounds like a suspension revalve, auto clutch, and G2 throttle cam would help out a ton.

Thank you

Dave

Go ride a WR450F or CRF250X down some tight single track and then we'll talk about being tired. The funny thing is that you're not tired from the "power" but you're tired from the weight and top heavy feel. Add to that the bikes are BORING to ride IMO. A smoker 250 with a Rekluse is such as nice setup for WA goat trails. I've ridden YZs with and without the Rekluse and it is night and day difference on these trails. You can ride mine sometime if you like just to be sure.

what do YOU guys think about a ktm 200?

It is a great bike but you do have to ride it on the pipe more, I am speaking of the pre 2008's as I have no knowledge of the 08's . You just cant get the torque

out of it like a 250. Not saying any thing neg just not my cup of tea I like the light feel of a 2stk and the grunt of a four stroke with a little zing on top.

i love my 08... ride it on the pipe for sure. powerful for me @ 160 pounds. very adjustable powervalve, nice luggable (if needed) low end. got mine set up to rip, like it alot. my buddy says the 250xc is a little more powerful so you don't have to run it on the pipe all the time...
