Motor siezed any guesses on why?

Was riding to top off my tank, noticecd some ratteling, sounded like valves. I was slowing to pull over and the engin, stopped dead and the ass end locked up. I puled in the clutch and coasted off the road. Kick start wont even budge. It isn't leaking any oil and I had only ridden 1/2 a mile. It does have oil, that I did check and coolant.I won't have a chance to tear into it till next weekend, any Ideas of what all I FU**** up?
Also, Has any one come up with a good way of telling your wife you think you just blew $500 plus when she was comlaining about me buying $5 and $10 dollar parts.

check the oil screen .i guy i know had that happen the screen was pluged with some fiber from the cluth. and yamaha says there is know problem with the cluths?????????? i hope you bought the extended warrenty

This is not the first time we have heard of this happening. The last couple of times after the bike sat for a day it unlocked it's self and never did it again.

No one ever figured it out. The same thing with loss of compression. If you pulled the clutch and coasted to the side, chances are it was not the clutch. Pull the plug and check it for oil, it could have siezed and oil ring, mabe not. You could have also siezed a valve. anyway to verify it's not the lower end, Pull the plug and GENTLY stroke the kick starter. If it moves smoothly chances are you didn't do any major damage. Additionally loosted the oil galley bolt on the line outside of the head and check the oil pump operation....If you stroke the kicker and oil comes out of the line, thats a good sign. Do those things and let us know what you find. We can then move onto other remedy's.

The Kick starter won't budge, it has been about 6 hours, the bike has cooled off. I can shift gears, if that helps any.

From your earlier description your transmission is ok...(Otherwise pulling in the clutch would have had no effect on your ability to pull off the road. This is an upper end issue for sure.

Did you pull the plug and try the kicker? You didn't say...

Matt,
My guess is a slipped or broken cam chain or valve spring. Rattling might be from piston hitting valves, bending them, then valves jamming open. That would keep piston from making top dead center. Don't keep trying to force the kickstarter. I would pop the head and have a look. Not likely to be crank-related, or anything else in the bottom end.
Could also be oil-related. Either way, the only way to properly diagnose is to tear your top end down. Good luck.

I managed to finally squeeze an hour into looking at my bike. I have it partially disassembled. here are more pieces to the puzzle. The bearings on the intake cam shaft are afu and some are missing, the retainer for them is bcrumpled. I pulled the spark plug and it is smashed flat. The cam shain wont move an inch. the kick starter still wont budge. I gotta quit for the time being, the rest of the week is booked, I miht get to do more disassebly tomorrow.
Would you believe I "Have" to go to a horse show instead of working on old Blue? That just aint right. Women.....

it dropped a valve.either the kkeper came off or the head popped off the valve and than all hell broke loose!not good.your going to need a head for sure! :)

are you sure you didnt get confused last time you service bike.maybe you filled radiators with oil and put the coolant in oil reservoir.

UUUMMMM yea, Pretty sure the fluids went where they were supposed to. Got a question for you, was the stroker kit and porting worth the cash? I Think I might be buying some new parts soon..

cams and headwork definitely added some serious torque.probably a little more than i need for trail riding.motor wants to rev a little to fast hard hook up coming out of turns.feels like im riding on the pipe all the time,even if i try and ride up a gear to lugg motor it doesnt take much to start wheel spin .im adding a 10oz flywheel weight hopefully that will help
mattnohiohills,for cost of engine and headwork your better off buying selling your bike and getting 03.i would of buy new bike but dont want red sticker since my 98 is ca.plated.i will just have to keep dumping $ into it if i want to keep up with the jone's.
