Frame Guards, What do ya'll suggest????

I'm taking some time to do upgrades on the bike since I can't ride this winter (snow). I was thinking about carbon fiber frame guards, but I read a post on the YZ side and Hick said he didn't like his ?. They were flimsy and wore quickly.

What do you guys suggest? If I don't get CF, that leaves more money for something else

I purchased the CF guards and if I had to do it over again I would have gone with aluminum or something else. The guards protect the frame from scrapes of course, but on one "get-off" the right guard flexed so much that it busted off the rear brake fluid reservoir. The guard itself cracked as well. So far I haven't been very impressed, other than with the prices, of the carbon fiber products.

Chris, Im with you on the CF guards. I had a CF pipe guard and it lasted for a couple of rides. The thing was $90.00 and not worth it at all. I just bought aluminum Works Connection guards for my WR426 and they are beautiful, and mounted up in minutes. See ya Dan

Works Connection aluminum. I put mine on immediately after learning my lesson w/ my Honda CR250.

I have Works Connection (I think - either WC or Thumper Racing) frame guards. I read somewhere that the CF guard will flex enough to bend the rear mc bracket. Apparently I squeeze the bike pretty tight because you can see the how far in I've bent the frame guard & MC bracket. I'd had to see what would happen with a CF version.

On a different note - Clark has been very impressed with the E-Line CF skid plate. I think he modified his slightly for some reason. Do a search on Clark Mason for more info.

I actually broke the rear reservoir bracket and had to weld it back on, so that is what can happen with CF frame guards. I was already planning on replacing them because of this apparent danger but obviously didn’t get around to it soon enough. I needed to learn how to weld aluminum anyway…

I do have a DSP skidplate and water pump/waterneck guard but they are both very thick and won’t flex, but I’m sure they are not as strong as the aluminum they replaced (although the DSP pump guard covers more than the stocker).

WC guards are well made, look good and fit perfect.

I'm with Hick on this one. I installed DSP frame guards on my 426 and already have worn a hole through the one on the brake side. Not happy at all with this.

I've got WConnection gaurds. They work great everything is fine with them but if I were to do it over I buy the blue plastic guards fro GYTR. I know plastic, hey they hold up great, look better, hell you can barely tell they're on there. In my opinion Yamaha should put them on stock like KTM.

Hell now that I've gone back and looked at them again, I just made up my mind I'm dithcing my WC guards and buying these (that is if they've released them yet!)

Also note how high they come up the frame, no one else comes close!

also note how yamaha finally has a yz style tank on their site. gee, kinda looks like a acerbis tank doesn't it? but where do they come up with their price-was that in pesos?

Yep, your right it is an Acerbis tank. They've actually had it under the GYTR label for a while...I doubt they sell many ?

and on top of that they are even kinda admitting that there is an ergonomic problem with the wr tank/seat. they shoulda gotten it right the first time. but then again they wouldn't be able to sell it as an accessory. kinda makes you think if they did that on purpose from the start!

I have the blue plastic ones. They look exactly like GYT-R ones but mine are Acerbis. Acerbis probably makes them for Yamaha too. They fit good and look good but there is one problem if you don't put some plastic or foam or something underneath them; they will scratch up your frame. I got them to protect the frame. They protect the frame from your boots but do their own bit scratching themselves. My advice: if you get them, put something under them to protect the paint. Oh, and I think they are about the same price as the Acerbis as well.

Funny how that works isn't it. Most if not all GYTR plastic is made by Acerbis. All of they're carbon fibre is made by DSP...

How can you blame them, can you imagine how much it would cost to tool up and produce all these items!

At least they're selling good quality stuff...for the most part ?

I've got the Maier gaurds and haven't had a problem yet. They fit on over the stock aluminum resovoir guard, so there's plenty of protection. The guards are pretty scratched up from my boots, but there's no wear underneath yet. What I tried first was ski-saver (clear adhesive tape) that's still underneath. That keeps the frame's paint from getting worn, but didn't want to stay stuck down. The guards help to keep it stuck to the frame.

I've been running the clear vinyl usd for MX number plates for all of last year. I doubled the layer in one high spot. I also ran it on the engine cases and it worked fine except for eventually wearing through and needing replacement. My motor still looks kind of new after a full season. Definitely worth $10 to do it.

I ordered the Yamacerbis frame guards too. Although it is too late to save the paint i have already rubbed off with my boots!@# I went with plastic because with all the junk i am adding I don't want to add too much weight. I'm thinking about ditching the head light odo and replacing it with a number plate. Bill, don't feel too bad every weekend that I don't work it rains! I'm in the same position I've got WConnections gaurds on now, but as we all know they don't protect high enough. It looks like the Yami one will. I guess I better call the dealership today...

Hey, does any one know where I can get some very thin rubber or something along those lines to put under the new plastic guards to protect the paint. I think if I can find something to put under the guards I'll go ahead and paint the frame with the PJ1 I've already bought.
