High elevation jetting

New to Dillon Colorado. elevation 9500 feet,and all trails climb. Just transfered from Roswell GA. Bike is jetted for sea level, and I would like to know who has any hands on experience in this altitude. Help me to regain the power!!!!

2001WR,YZ cam time,White brothers head pipe and E series,no throttle stop,grey wire cut,stock jetting,no air box lid,scotts steering dampner. :)

This is my current setup. It runs real good at around 9-10K but runs like crap at my house which is at about 6K. With the warmer weather I am going to have to rejet.

hope you'll put more up dan, sounds like a very lean straight, medium/rich pilot circuit and a lean top end.

if it runs crap at the house it's because it's lean i would suggest.

if your problems are at higher revs i would suggest it's the MJ. if you go up enough to work between the two altitudes you can help everyone with some great results.

it's usually Mj up 5 and needle dropped one.

I'm assuming you're MXTuna's buddy from Jawjah? If so, PM me..

About regaining the power: Unfortunately, you won't. You'll lose about 20% living at altitude. Makes the trips to the enduros in Texas worthwhile tho. :D

I can't help you much with the jetting, sorry. They all seem to be a little different. I know of 2 00 WR's and 3 01 YZ's that are all jetting slightly differently. You can probably start with Dan's as a baseline and experiment from there.

K-Rad,
I would try either one of the following...and experiment from there (I havent had an opportunity to ride that high yet...although I will be very soon!):

38PJ/65PAJ/EKP#3/1.5 turns/150MJ/160MAJ
-This is what I ride now at Rampart (7.5K - 9.5K ft.)...works fantastic!
-Also ran great in Moab (4K - 5K ft.).
-Might have to drop the needle a clip position to #2.

OR

35PJ/50PAJ/EKN#3/1.5 turns/150MJ/160MAJ
-Will be experimenting with this setup this weekend...havent tried it yet...but am fairly certain it will do great.
-Might have to drop the needle a clip position to #2.

OR

35PJ/50PAJ/EMM#4/1.5 turns/145MJ/160MAJ
-Havent tried yet...waiting on needle.
-Might have to drop the needle a clip position to #3.

Hope that helps. After the 4th of July weekend, I'll have "super high altitude" jetting sorted out...and will share my results (probably riding in Ouray, CO and Crested Butte, CO...up past 13K ft.).

Hey KRAD, I live at 7000' here in AZ. Currently running stock jetting, bike has 200 miles on it, so just breaking in. We're headed to Steamboat Springs in two weeks. I'm gonna run a 40 pilot and 160 main, and drop the needle a clip position.

Rode it last weekend in tight singletrak up to 8500' and it ran ok. Came home on 5th gear two track. No problems with fouling plugs so far on stock jetting. Suspect if I lived low, I'd be jetting up.

Will report on performance/jetting choices in a coupla weeks.


BTW, have you pedaled up to Vail pass from Dillon yet? Good training.........

KRAD, most of us that live and ride at higher elevations gear down. I put a 52 rear on my bike last weekend worked great.

Also, high elevations don't provide cooling as good, less mass of air flowing thru the radiators. I'm running a KX500 optional 1.6 cap. No boil overs in A loop enduro conditions, but my rich jetting is probably helping it run cool........

I have to run that lean for the area I ride, 9-11k feet. I will probably lean it to a 38PJ, #4 or #3 clip and 152 MAJ soon once the weather gets warmer. It runs great at 10k feet though this last weekend my 1/4 -1/2 throttle was popping a little. Other than that it was fine. I will probably just drop the neeedle to 4 this weekend. The temp should be about 70.

What else would you like to know Taffy? I have found this to be the best setup for my bike so far. Everyone here said to lean my bike out so I did. But when I was going up in elevation the bike was running better so I figured I was actually too lean and richened it up a little. Now I know what a too lean bike feels like. I haven't experienced too rich yet but I am learning.

My bike didn't like the EKN needle, too rich?. I had to lean it too much and ran out of jets, still fouling plugs. I guess it is real good at sea level though and for YZ timed.

Just back from Hahn's Peak/Little Red Park area north of Steamboat.

Rode all week, elevations from 8 to 10.5. Lots of rain and snow.

Ran 40 pilot, OEM needle 3rd clip, 160 main.

Worked great. Had lots of jets with me, but didn't feel need to change.

Wonderful trails.........

Hey Buckholz,
I have a friend in Steamboat and have been riding in that same area a number of times. Very fine riding. What's the riding like around Flagstaff ?? Much single track in the area ?? Always looking for new areas to ride.
