popular yzf pipe?

Recommended Posts

Dr. D, FMF, and pro circuit systems are all very popular. The pro circuit is obnoxiously loud though, so loud that it doesn't even sound good IMO. I have used the Dr. D and the FMF systems and I personally prefer the FMF system, but the Dr. D is still a great pipe.

what about white bros?

They made a good pipe, but they went out of business about 9 months ago. Vance and Hines bought out their pipe devision and is going to start making the pipes under the new name, but they haven't released any yet and no one knows when they will. Since the WR and the YZ have the same engine, you probably are going to have a hard time smoking your buddy no matter what if he has done the free mods.

They don't quite really have the same engine, though, and the suspension isn't close.

Even with the free mods done and a pipe, all of which do make a difference, the WR still doesn't have YZ cam timing, and unless he Mickeys the auto decompression pin, he can't get it for free. The advance curve of the CDI is also more in tune with lower rpm power than high. Then there's the weight issue.

Yes, but these differences are fairly minor in comparison to how different the engines could be. He could easily purchase a YZ cam for $5 off ebay, as this is the biggest difference in the two engines. The difference in these two bikes affects the outcome of a race much less than a difference in riding ability (even in a drag race). Bobby Kiniry pulls every holeshot in the open A class on his box stock 250F (his practice bike for local races doesn't even have a pipe on it) and runs away with the races.

after i bought the yzf450 07 he wanted the wr so he went w/ the 08. i mocked him over and over for not getting the mods done. once he did he went w/ the new pipe aswell. now im used to the glory, so i want to one-up him again. Im going to get my suspension redone first for woods but i also want more bling. its all fun but still..

I went with a full system from MRD Racing. Why? They are well priced, come with a Spark Arrestor, semi-local to me, they repair the pipe for free (forever), and the owner Dave is also the janitor. I talked to him about my needs and everything has been excellent - fit & quality. I think it sounds great, mellow at idle and real throaty when on the pipe.

i was wondering if it was a shorter pipe than the stocker. do you have any pics?

also is the full system recommended or am i going to see a real improvement w/ just the slip-on?

Its a couple of inches shorter than stock. As for performance, I did a whole bunch of things at once so don't know the individual contributions.?

No pics at the moment.

I have an MRD full system as well and I like it alot. especially with the baffle in since I ride supermoto. Sounds mean at idle and has a good throaty thump to it . My bike starts way easier with the MRD, im not sure why but it does. Plus they look sweet imo, they are smaller than a lot of pipes both in length and circumference. I would go for the full system, an MRD full system is about as much as most other companies slip ons so you might as well.

The DRD is excellent, pulls hard throughout the rev range, and is available with a removable USFS spark arrestor installed for $15 extra. The Sparky can be added later, but it costs much more that way. I bought mine with it and didn't use it on either bike for a year or more, then we started running desert races, where the rules require them (please don't ask why). I was glad I didn't have to spend the money later to solve that problem. DRD's customer service is first rate, too. The one criticism of the DRD I have from owning two of them is that it's a little tough on packing, and it seems that the only stuff that holds up well in them is the proprietary preformed pillow they sell for it, which costs $29. OTOH, it's a snap to use, and makes a repack a simple, neat process.

The FMF is also a good system, but it's a little hard to find in full stainless, so it can cost a lot. But you said budget aside. The 'Bomb headers advantage is in spreading the power band outward from the peak point in both directions. On an '03, this is very noticeable in that it gets rid of the "pull-flat spot-hit" power curve of the stock bike and makes it much more linear. This is less advantageous, or even noticeable with the '06 or '07, since those are already nearly as linear as electric motors, but it does help fatten up the bottom a little. IIRC, it also comes with a sparky option, but I don't know the particulars.

MRD systems can be custom ordered without affecting the price very much, and if you contact the owner/builder/custodian/salesperson, you can get a pipe built for almost any sort of power output that a pipe can actually deliver. How effective he is at doing this is something I don't personally have any experience with, but the systems seem well liked, and the guarantee is unmatched.

Remember that a pipe can only accomplish so much on an '06-'07 YZ450, because there isn't a lot of room for improvement over the stock systems on those models.
