How often do you change oil in your 07' 450??

Hahaha...no worries man...It's come up a few times, lol...

I actually mounted mine into my bar pad, and cut out a little window just big enough to see the display on it (as it has rpms and hours)...Some guys would probably give me crap for it being like that because if I crash into the bar pad I may end up with some plastic shrapnel in me, but some people have a steering damper with big nasty knobs and no pad at all, so I figure it's all good...I'll go with the risk...

I change my oil every 3 rides. Thats a full saturday ride. How do you people measure in hours? Do you start the clock and stop it when you take a break? From riding my honda xr for years on the same trails i do about 35 miles per ride.
So roughly 100 miles in between oil changes.

So, you ride "all day", and go about 35 miles. This is the problem when trying to convert the time you spend riding to actual run time without an hour meter. Would you say that you ride at an average speed of 25 MPH? Then you are riding for no more than 1.4 real hours, plus idling time, and changing oil at 4.2.

I'm all for carrying GPS, but I'd rather have the actual amount of time the bike is firing, and be able to easily keep track of total time on that bike alone, plus have an accurate rpm reading...
But I use the hour meter more for keeping track of "service intervals" as opposed to maintenance intervals...
I basically do this after every day of riding:
1. Wash the bike (with the muffler plug in)
2. Clean and lube the chain, check alignment/tension
3. Swap the dirty air filter for a clean prelubed one
4. Change the oil (Amsoil) along with blowing out the Scott’s filter
5. Check the coolant, various bolts, spokes, clutch freeplay
6. Start it up and let it run for a minute or two
7. Put it away knowing it's ready for tomorrow...

I'll let it slide for two days (or 3 if it's only a few hours each day) when out camping...But just know that a clean air filter, clean oil, and level coolant goes a long way for these bikes...
Personally I'd like yami's to separate the gear oil from the engine oil like the hondas...But that's just an opinion...I'm sure there are positive reasons for mixing the two, but for someone who's hard on the clutch I'd rather not have my friction plate wear end up in my cylinder...

oops didnt i was in this forum
for my wr it says 10hrs or 1000 kms for and oil change. If i go with 1000kms is that Ok or is it too long. I dont ride hard, just puttin around trails.

Thats what i was getting at... maybe i will have to get one of these hour meters.

With the tight twisty mountain trails here in utah there is no way i average 25 mph. Most every down hill segment is done in neutral with the bike off, just coasting like a mountain bike. Im really curious now to see how much actual time the bike is running. Do they make one that tracks miles and hours?

One more question. Im putting on the rekluse auto clutch this week. Should i start changing the oil after every 2 rides (say 5-8 hours ride time) Any recommendations on that?

For that, you would want an enduro computer, such as a Trail Tech unit.

If your average were only 12.5 mph, you would be changing oil at 8.4 hours as is. I already addressed the oil change interval question:

Amsoil is brutally expensive! That's what the guy I bought it from used so I'm gonna stick with it. Every time I buy it I walk like a penguin for a couple of days.

Every third ride, assuming you use MCF 10w-40, and not one of their many automotive blends. In really hot weather, you might want to move up to MCV (20w-50) I do that during the hottest couple months of the summer, then it's back to the 40. I also stretch it to 4 rides sometimes, if they were short or easy.

You change oil twice in 5 hours? Your math is weird. You use 1 qt plus 60-70cc more each oil change with filter service (1.06 qt) You buy two the first time, and the second quart supplies the 70cc difference for the next 13 oil changes after that, so it's closer to $7 every oil change. If you are going to whine about spending $7 every third ride to protect a $2500+ engine, you're on your own.

I buy mine by the case, direct from Amsoil as a preferred customer. So can you. Added together, including the preferred customer fee and the shipping, the oil costs me about $7/qt, delivered.

Yep, MCF motorcycle oil. I have a preffered customer account so $7 a bottle works for me.:thumbsup: I have an hour meter, I changed oil for the first time 1.8 hours ago( 3.9 hours total) so a recomended time interval would probly work better than every three rides for me. Thanks for the help!

I think most seem to be in agreement that 5hrs would be a recommended oil change interval...
I say also, get a Scotts filter and blow it out each time as opposed to having to change the stock one every 10hrs...
And I'm going to get magnetic drain bolts, and a magnetic oil filter cover as soon as funds allow (just broke the bank on a complete Hinson clutch)...
As your clutch wears, it grooves notches into the clutch basket, and those tiny shavings along with friction plate wear mix with your oil, which then flows through the rest of the engine...We on Yamis have to change our oil twice as much as our buddies on Hondas to keep our engines clean (since thier gear oil is separate from the engine oil)...
