I just bought my first bike that wasn't Japanese.  I live in Hawaii with very technical slow trails.  I recently bought a 2001 GasGas 300EC.  It has gobs of torque and power immediately down low and into the midrange.  Then, it seems like there is literally almost no topend.  It's like the engine hits a wall at a certain RPM and peters out.  The compression is great on the bike.  The bike has never had a topend job done though.  It's never been cracked open.  I bought it with low hours.  Do these bikes have a topend.  If so, what do I need to do to get it back.  I've been out of riding for 10 years, so I'm having to relearn everything.  I'm satisfied with the power for what I'm doing, it just doesn't have near the fun factor of the last 9 bikes I owned and they were all 2T's from the 90's.  Any input would be appreciated.  I know nothing about these bikes.

I it has the stock messico pipe then no. If you get Doma or DEP pipe it will increase the power quite well. If you want you can try out this power pack. It does wounder.

The EC300 definately has a top end so it sounds like you may not be jetted correctly or something not quit right. I have two 05 EC300's and a 02 EC200 and all three bikes have plenty of low end (especially the 300's) and rip on the top end. The are the fastest bikes I have ever owned. I have FMF gnarly pipes on my bikes so I am not sure what exhaust you have but you may want to call a company called "Go Fasters "and ask for Steve he can probably steer you in the right direction. Funny I ended up with this 300 gasgas from this thread after a couple of other owners. It definitely has top end now and runs great. I used it for the first time in a very very long time since I had given this bike to my cousin..and recently got it back.

Here we are yesterday in some rain having fun in some wet technical stuff in central Oahu..

Sounds like jetting to me my 2010 has top end.  Like most bikes getting the jetting sorted to what you like is the key.

I don't know what you consider tough and what you ride . ... It's hard enough I guess... not toughest in the world ..no erzberg... I think... Check out some of the vids to get a little idea. I'm pretty sure I would be very tired and happy when i was finished .. I don't think the length of the race is that low too.....but... I guess it's good to check the website for all these types of questions so you get the best answers to your questions . No matter what even though I only did one I will always remember what an awesome race that is and the people that put it on are awesome too.

I received an email from an organizer and day 1 is 100 miles through the rain forest.  If it is 100 miles of tough riding that is one thing.  If it reaches the point of lifting bikes over logs, repeatedly, then I don't think I'd have much fun. We have some pretty tight trails in the PNW but not quite like Hawaii.

I have never ridden this event but have thought about it for years.  I have already hijacked this thread enough so I'll close by saying I really want to do this in 2012 and am looking at the cost of sending my bike over and will make my mind up in the next several days.  I know I'd have a great time but as a recreational rider, 100 miles on Saturday may do me in.  My record is 130 miles in one day but a lot of that was fire roads.  I'll check out more of the vids and pics.
