Best Cylinder Hone???????

I want to clean up the Cylinder on my RM 400 N....which is the best type of Cylinder Hone to use??????

Any ball hone will work. Really all you have to do is take a scotch brite pad to it to remove the glaze.

A ball hone is tops. Don't use a cheapo hone with the 3 arms and stones on a 2 stroke. The stones get caught up on the ports.

Do the 3 blade arm hones work well on 4-stroke cylinders?

They are fine for 4 strokes. IMO the ball hone is still the better way to go. One advantage of the 3 stone design ones is their available at any auto parts store.

the ball hone if used correct will hone in a nice cross hatch patern at a 45 deg. this is the best hone job you could do. those three arm hones dont cross hatch cylinders they just take the glaze off. if i was building an engine and wanted it to break in correctly i would go with the ball hone. if i was throwing an engine together just for a weekend of drag racing then a quick three arm hone i would use. but on 2-strokes a ball hone no matter what our your asking for port damage

Do i need to buy the exact size hone????

Bore size is 82mm....mmmm 3.22 inches

Can i use a 3.5 or 4 inch hone?????

There is no exact size ball hone, they are sold by size range. Just buy one in the size range your cylinder falls in. The 3.5in should be fine. 'nutcase

If you want it right, you should never use a berry hone on a two cycle. The balls fall into the ports and erode the edges of your cylinder at the ports. It causes sealing issues. A sizing hone is the best. Any auto machine shop will do it.

Sunnen brand hones the three arm rachet type we use .the rite stuff but very$$

Ball hone is affordable at garage level and better for less ex.user as the three arm Sunnen will remove to much stock . Although it will be a straight oversize hole.
