headlight question(s)

Hey Guys,

got a couple of quesions on the headlight on my WR450 08 model

i read on this site somewhere that it's a dual filiment bulb in there now.??

if yes to that first questions

can i plug in the other filiment, effectivly using the highbeam rather than the low beam... generally brighter on the highbeam

then i could just aim the headlight where i want it.

Yes and Yes...You just have to switch the wire in the plug to the headlight to the one with the plug in it. It should have a (3) wire connector but only (2) wires going to it....if it is just like my 07'.

the bad thing is both filiments are the same wattage . so high beam is a little higher . but because it's the same power it seems dimmer because it's lighting a bigger area. the best mod on these bikes as far a light goes is the 40 buck baja designs stator mod kit .

Or... do the stator job (the kit from Baja, a gasket and a hour of carefull time) and put a switch on the bike to select hi or low beam..... getting dangerously close to... well, a brake light and a plate!

One big benny of doing the stator and running the light off of the battery is it is at full brightness regardless of engine speed.

im installing the kit right now and all i have to say is the stator part is the biggest pain.

Go slow on the stator change, nice and neat, good solder job, be sure to get all the cut clip out. Worth spending an extra bit of time to think and be as methodical and professional as you can.

A little Yamabond on the grommet where it exits the case.

Can i not just replace the bulb in there

with a normal 55/85 watt bulb ?

that would make it alot easier

I installed a 45/45 watt bulb and a hi/low switch...the switch is convenient but not that much brighter than stock. JMHO

Stock stator will be overtaxed if you put in a larger wattage bulb. The stator mod douibles its' output, enabling you to easily run a 55/60 headlight.

No, it does not change the stator life.

The stock stator has two independant sections, each about 50 watts AC, I think. One AC that feeds the head light and a the other goes through the regulator/retifier, becoming DC, that feeds the battery (which feeds the tail light, starter and CDI). What happens is you combine the two sections of the stator, giving you 100 watts AC. Then using a larger regulator/rectifier, all the power goes to the battery, which in turn feeds everything else. There is a fair amount of wiring to do to get everything right. This is how the Baja Designs Dual Sport kit works.

your right on the duel wounds and how they work. And it does require some wiring ill let you know how it goes with my stator mod on sunday.

If you work as slow as I do (I savoir every moment, that's what I tell people), it will take about 1 hour to remove the cover, remove the stator, cut the clip (I masking taped the hole thing so when I dremeled the clip, the copper bits did not go into the windings), remove the clip and wire clamp, remove the wire, unsolder the lead, put the barrel connector and special insulator on, solder and reassemble. I did not crimp the barrel before I soldered, I did not want the crimp to crush and possibly weaken the winding. I simply filled the barrel with solder.

Read the directions like 20 times before you do anything. If when you do it, it is not crystal clear, take a step back, think and read it again. It is pretty simple, after it is done. But this is not a job you want to find out you made a mistake.

A little clarification here - the 03 and up 450s have a 100/25 AC/DC split. So, theoretically you can run up to a 100 watt bulb on the stock system (the stock headlight runs off AC), although at that wattage the light will be dim at idle and the connectors/reflector/lens might start warping with the heat.

BTW, where did you get those LED blinkers from, and NICE looking bike:thumbsup:

thanks alot guys. theres a long story to the bike.an older gentleman bought the bike and only rode around his yard. he later passed away and left the bike in a heated garage only to be taken out by his adult son. not to bad for 3200 i say.

i got the blinkers from baja design its there upgraded blinkers. i just got the plate today so it will be on the road tomorrow.

I think they look dangerously vulnerable there
