Welcome! Make sure you check out the Trials section of TT (if you haven't found it already...). The skills from the bicycle will deffinatly transfer over. I ride occasionally with both a world champion, and the U.S. champion bicycle trial-ist. One has just gotten his bike and is progressing very quickly, and the other has had a bike for 3 years now and is currently the best moto-trials rider in New England.:worthy:

Welcome mark! Its wild going back and forth from a trials bike to the WR. After several months of practice I got out my WR450 the other day and it felt like I was sitting on a freight train compared to the GasGas.

Me too... I can do even more than those guys in my sleep. It's doing it while I'm awake that's difficult.

As a wise dodgeballer named White Goodman once said: "Touche!"

Thanks for the welcome gang. I should be getting the bike early next week, so expect a fury of posts on how to fix a broken fender, straighten the handlebars and "is your Sherco ripping the bars out of your hands?!"

Cheers,

Thanks for the warning... You might read CRM114's post "R-e-s-p-e-c-t". Be prepared to let go of the bike in a hurry if you accidentally grab too much throttle.

Even the other day, somehow my glove caught the throttle as I was doing something like adjusting my grip over a rough spot in a fresh trail and blipped the throttle when I wasn't expecting it. In a split second I was off the trail by 10 feet before I regained control. It happens from time to time too when I'm tired.

Being a brand new bike, you might be tempted to hang on...... Don't! Granted, if and when it happens, there's no time to think about it, it needs to be instinct that you step off the back and roll if you can.

Good luck and go ahead and send the flurry of questions.. I'll give Fester a nudge so that he's ready.. :smirk:

Oh yes, if you can, read through some of the older threads. Many questions by new riders have been discussed and repeated many times and sometimes with some really good responses. No problem reviving an old thread if you have more to add.

With your WR and bicycle experience, I'm sure your observations will be interesting and helpful to other riders new to Trials. I know I'm interested in hearing how the transition goes for you.

Congrats on new bike!!!:applause:

Make sure you have a slow throttle on that bike when you are learning. The throttle tube will be white. This will save you broken fenders and such!!!!

Hey thanks Tom. Yeah, I've had the bike for a while now, and I don't find the fast throttle that bad actually. Its actually a lot slower than on my hopped up WR... My mtb trials background is transferring nicely and I find it quite easy to hop up big stuff, compared to the mtb. What I'm spending a lot of time on right now, is the super slow speed skills, full lock turns and such... and wheelies of course. :applause:

Ok back to the thread... Nice crashes 2ply. Some of the show how truly slippery some of those rocks are.

You mean people actually fall off these bikes!!
I rode my first trial in 8 years last weekend. I rode as a junior hoping to break myself in slowly. Well my bike only has 6 hours on it and it doesn't look new anymore. I took care of that "First Scratch" by the 2nd section. It went downhill from there. I was physically exhausted by the end of the day but I'm looking forward to doing it again. I do love this sport.
Welcome Mark and enjoy your bike.

You are riding with a tough bunch on Vancouver Island. I know some of those guys. Great people and they have produced more than just a couple Champions from there.
Hang in there and be sure to ask for tips and pointers......... And maybe cover your bike in duct tape before the next event. ;)

P.S. You might try to hook up with "Old Man Dan" here on TT. He's 47 and looking into getting his first Trials Bike and lives on Vancouver Island too.

A good practice for tight turns is the clover leaf course.

Set up four markers, with a tape 1.2m off the marks around the boundaries. As you get better, make it tighter and steeper. It's made me appreciate getting the widest entry possible, to make room for the rear to pass the mark.

The clover leaf generally trips up mates who ride mx bikes, they can blast up or over other objects, but slow balanced turns that gets a dab.:banghead:

We appreciate the compliment, but at the risk of offending the other bike riders and maybe a few radical religions, maybe we can switch the first letters of 2 words and then we can be "Gruely Tods" which still sounds like a compliment... I hope.. :busted:
