Electrical/Starter issues WR 450

Real similar thread going about the LED but I'm having a slightly different problem. Brand new fresh battery installed fully charged. LED will not come on E-start won't work. Bike will start with kick and after bike is run for a while and ignition is turned back on LED will light up but go out as soon as start button is hit it will go out again. Bike is a 2003 WR 450 I bought used and I would love to get the E-start to work, any help is appreciated.

The schematic appears to the same as the one I posted in the previous LED thread.

1. Perform the same checks as outlined in the other LED thread.

2. If everything checks good, then check the starter relay and the power to the starter. If you have good connections, +12v and a good ground at the starter, then you likely have a bad starter.

3. Check the voltage across the LED and the LED wiring and connectors.

I would recommend checking the starter relay under the seat. You'll have to go get some jumpers to wire it to the battery to test it. But that is where I would start.

If that doesn't work, then make sure that you have voltages present at the starter solenoid.

Do you have a manual, you should follow the electrical test procedures.

Electrical problems require quite a bit of patience to figure out.

Yeah I do have the manual sounds like this not an easy fix. The part that really sucks is that when I first purchased this bike last summer the battery had almost enough life left in it to start the bike. The previous owner assured me that all it needed was a new battery to get the E-start going. Put it off and rode it with the kicker for a summer. Sounds like it will take some digging to solve this one. Thanks to all you have given some good tips to get me started. What exactly is the LED telling you I always thought it was indicating that the battery had a good charge?

The led is supposed to go out once the engine is started. Basically, it tells you the stator is generating power, though if you were deaf, it would also function to let you know the engine was running.

Remember on cars when they had the alternator/battery light, same principle.

...and to indicate that you left the ignition switch on. (So you don't run the battery down.)

so all is fine untill you hit the start button ? correct ?

do you hear the relay click? do you have a test light?

check to see if you get power @ the starter motor. if you do.

i would bet that your starter motor is a dead duck. from here i would get it

out and bench test it! thats my guess and 2 cents worth

So no actually it's not all right until I hit the starter. When I click on the ignition button I get no LED light no e-start basically nothing. Bike will run with kick start. After it has run for a while if I shut it down I will get the LED and as soon as I hit the start button the LED just goes out. So it's acting like a dead battery but the battery checks out fine. I even tried another battery out of my CBR with same result. I will get in garage this weekend with multi-tester and see what I find. Thanks to all.

Ok so some how now led works must have been a loose connection. Relay clicks when starter is pushed and nothing else. Did the jumper wire trick and lo and behold starter works. Ok so at the risk of sounding like an idiot my relay is bad right?

Ok sorry for all the posts the clicking is coming from the cut off relay.

Could be a bad relay. Sure sounds like it. But first, un-plug and then plug back in all the wires to ensure it not a bad connection, inspect the terminals too for corrosion or looseness.

My bike came with interlocks on the neutral position and the clutch lever(I think).... might want to check those too... the easy check would be to temporarily jumper those leads.

do you have the service manual. It has a series of steps to check all electrical components.

Have you followed that?

I am not sure its the relay. .. sounds the like the input for the relay is missing.

you jump and the bike turns over.. telling my that the input wire for the relay is not triggering the relay.

Ok just found section in manual for testing relays and will give that a go. So Warts you mean the red wire or brown one?

have not looked at the wiring, the relay should have the wiring diagram on it.

I also suggest putting a meter on the battery. Test with the bike off, ignition button on, running at idle and at mid throttle.

Battery is brand new checks out. Relay failed Ohm test will order this week $50.00 I finally have E-start yay!! Thanks to all for your help.
