so I had a few minutes here at work this friday afternoon and I called the Scott USA guys who apparently rep the acerbis stuff here in the USA. the guy said he didn't know if the DR350 tank would work on a DR-Z250 and said he had actually never even heard of the DR-Z250 even though they have it in their parts search engine. He told me the only way to see would be to order one from a shop that would take returns if it didn't fit and of course you'd eat some shipping costs to find out for sure.

Nobody seems to offer aftermarket rear disc guards for the DRZ250.  But if you need one, get one that's made for the DRZ400.  The OEM plastic guard is the same for both bikes and the uses same part #.  The mount holes are in the same location.

good to know on the rear disc guard

the old style acerbis front disc guard for the XR250 is supposed to work on the DR-Z250, but they are not made anymore

I'd be interested in knowing if any tanks from other bikes fit (I've heard that the Acerbis XR400 tank fits if you make an adapter bracket?) - and any seats.

What about rear racks?  The only one I'm aware of for the DR-Z250 is the Pro Moto.

Roadstergal you are right, there is rumours of fitting XR tanks and screwing the DRZ front mounts on, but I certainly wouldn't order one blindly, I;m not sure about the width of the underside and whether the XR tanks clear all your carb cables.

Alternatively there is a trick I read from adventure guys of putting hot water in you tank then pressurising it through the breather tube with a bike pump.... again do some research before trying

As for rear racks, It might be worth checking DRZ400 racks, I think they have the same mounts on the side of the rear subframe, just not sure of hieghts etc.

i take it you are looking at setting your little doctor Z up as a adventure tourer? Would love to see your progress on this.

Thanks for the info; I'll look into the 'tank expansion.'

M'boy has a DR-Z400S with a rear rack; it would be easy to see if it fits.

Well, Step One is to buy the thing - I'm going to take a look at a local plated one tonight.  M'boy has done Baja on an XR650L before we met, and wants to go back on his DR-Z400; I think a DR-Z250 might be just the ticket for me to go with him.  I could mock him for his lack of a six-speed and kickstart.

Sounds great.

make sure you do a thread in the drz section on your preparation and the baja with lots of pics.

oh yeah, and RE tank expansion, it should definitly work, because my DRZ is 7years old now it has naturally swollen a little. I think it holds about 12L

Does anyone know if the DRZ250 uses the same battery as the DRZ400?

No, they are not the same.  Completely different sizes and ratings.  Not to say you couldn't modifiy something in a pinch, but I wouldn't swap the two if I didn't have to.

tdrrally, how did you go about mounting the tank? Strait swap or make brackets and stuff? What about the seat junction? Anymore photos from other angles would be great. Bet you can go a long way on that sucker!

i will post some more pix asap work is crazy right now
so far the front mount is looking like some bolt on brackets to use the drz250 mounts with the tanks mounts i will know more later
i did get the tank to work with the djebel headlight mount on the up side
a 9" headlight and 5.8 gallons of gas makes for a good time

the seat joint is a bit off at this time but not awfull

Here's a list from my research:
http://spreadsheets....JWWTRnZlE&hl=en

Recommendations:
use the pre 86 DR125 oil filter cover. It does not have the nut recesses which makes it really easy to use something other than a socket to remove the cover. I typically have all my combination wrenches in one tool box, but have to go searching for a socket, so I like the cover for this reason. In the event one of the nuts should be damaged, you can use a vice grip or other tool to get a grip on it if the socket won't mate.
If you were going to dual sport it, I'd use any of the DR/SP 125/200 complete electronics and harness since these were designed to run a headlight and tail light.

I've put the DR-Z125 exhaust on a DR125, I'd imagine you could go the other way with relative ease. However, the DR exhaust weighs a good 5-10lbs more and is prone to rust so I don't know why you would want to.
Supposedly the older headers are better than the modern ones for flow, but I haven't tested this.

Carbs appear to be a direct swap.
