I just picked up my '08 today and was reading the manual that came with it(I've never seen such a comprehensive manual come with a new bike). Now I've never owned a modern trials bike(only a '74 and an '89) and was a little shocked to read what they called "periodic replacment parts".New spark plug, eng & trans oils and filter after every 6 "races"-OK not too bad. But new piston rings twice a year and new piston every year.
I'm a novice rider, not too aggressive, and other than the occasional trial I just plan on riding tight trails. I do believe in maintaining my bikes but can someone give me an idea of just how much I can plan on spending on parts like pistons, rings, clutches and all the gaskets and O rings that go along with them? I can do my own repairs but I've got a feeling that Montesa parts aren't cheap.
And is Lewisport the best place to buy parts?
Sorry for the long letter but as excited as I am to have a new bike I'm a little overwhelmed at the thought of spending a thousand bucks a year to keep it running. Thanks

I would think that is a general maintenance schedule by Honda, in order to keep the engine at 100% operating capacity. Just as an example, I know guys who own the Honda CR250F mx models, and they haven't done anything to them in 3 years. The maintenance schedule calls for replacing the piston and rings every 10-15 hours (or something consistent as that, don't exactly recall). They just keep riding them, and at 10,000 rpm. You can tell the bike is not at 100%, probably more at 90%. But nontheless, they still ride them and enjoy them.

IMO if you don't consistently ride at a high speed (like going on trail rides a lot) and keeps the engine oil and filter changed on a regular basis, you'll be fine for some time. If you ride the bike for what it was designed for (trials) I believe that the amount of time you spend at the low rpm level of the engine will greatly contribute to a long engine life. Just my opinion......

BTW, I have a GasGas 280, but I really like the 4RT......

Thanks for the reply. It helps to put my mind at ease a little. I have the DRZ for faster trail riding and wanted another trials bike for playing and plonking-I miss the slow technical stuff. I bought the Montesa because of its reputation and that (hopefully)reliable Honda engine. My trials ability is nowhere near the capabilities of the bike but I'm hoping to learn and improve.

I've had a 2005 4RT for almost a year now. Engine is perfect. Have replaced a number of other parts (bearings, brake pads etc) but oil and filter changes every 15 or so hours with top quality oil will keep it going for quite a while. I have done about 80 hours in a year - most trials add only 2 or 3 hours, most of which is at lowish revs. So very little wear. Have heard of 1 piston being replaced at about 80 hours ... wasn't really necessary as only a little wear. This was on the bike of a top level rider which constantly saw very high revs.

:prof: yeah dude dont trip keep the valves adjusted and regular oil changes and youll be fine youll probably never need rings or a piston.my 426 yamaha 02 just went to get a compression check and a valve adjustment for the 1st time, the yamaha tech didnt even need to pull out his tools, and i ride the piss out of it,but that manual said the same bullshit too

Start with putting an hour meter on the bike. Under $30.

I just got a new 06 4RT a couple of months ago, love it.The manual is very comprehensive wish my KTM manuals were like that.Keep an eye on the engine oil as it's under 500cc not much! Change your engine, tranny oil and filter pretty regularly and it should last a long time depending on hours and abuse of coarse. Also use the Elf tranny oil and Silkolene motor oil too.How about posting a picture of the new 08 like to see what they look like as the are not available here in the states!

The dealer up here has the longride seat/tank in stock. Not cheap. $600.00CDN and our dollars are about 1 cent off par.I splurged. I have a great wife(and a lot of sucking up to do). I treat my bikes well and they will probably have to last me until I'm too old to ride!
The front of the seat slides into a clip. The rear has a snap on either side to lock it on. Only takes seconds-no tools needed.
The read somewhere that the seat is available in the US at a lower price.Lewisport shows a seat for $179. but it does not mention a tank.

Thanks for the reply.Does the seat have to be used with a new tank too?Or is the tank just a extra added item for more fuel capacity I would imagine. That is one darn good looking machine, somthing about that black frame looks way cool.

The tank/seat I have is used with the stock tank. The vent tube on the stock tank sucks the fuel from the auxillary tank through it's cap. There is another vent tube attached that I have not figured out the purpose for yet.
I've ordered some case guards and master cylinder guards from these guys.

I've had the bike for 4 days and have only been able to ride around my yard so far. It's killing me!
