I am rebuilding the top end on my 01 426. I will be installing the 00 SS valve set up. My question is regarding the seats in my 01 head. Do the valve seats need to be changed to use the SS valves? Or can I just have the seats finished cut and then lap the SS valves to the seats?

Seats are the same...just have 'em cut. I'm sure you are aware that you need t use the earlier year springs and seats with the SS valves...

That's spring seats, BTW. The springs are necessary because the SS valves are heavier.

Yes, that's what I meant. Thanks for the clarification!

I'll have the seats cut. Is "lapping" necessary with the SS valves? Also what is a fair price for the machine work?

If the seats are cut, lapping is pretty much a must. If they are ground, it isn't necessary. I know you re using stainless, but for the rest of the world, NEVER LAP Ti VALVES.

25 bucks a hole is about the going rate for grinding...Eric Gorr or Engine Dynamics are both good shops for this kind of work.
