:prof: took apart my bike last week do to some trouble shooting issues, and i might add the engineering genious of gasgas is right there with ktm,i can strip that whole bike down in hours with a small handfull of tools, some of the body clips with the nut on the back were toast, went to ace hardware, body clips in metric, stainless allen flatheads,a bitchen thumb screw for the gas tank you can remove without a wrench, nuts, bolts ,nyloc nuts etc .all kinds of shit!:applause:no shipping,no down time:thumbsup:

ok, i have a feeling i'm going to catch a whole landslide of crap with this reply but...... eh...
let me preface this by saying that i adore my new (new to me at least) Gas Gas 280 TXT Pro. it is a solid machine and a blast to ride. i certainly intend to spend the bulk of my riding time straddling it.
that being said, my little GG is sitting in the garage right next to a 2008 KTM 250SX (for sale, by the way) and i must say, the engineering of the KTM is on a significantly higher level than the GAS GAS. the KTM is near aerospace quality (oxymoron?) whereas the Gas Gas is near flea market BMX quality, complete with shabby hardware and cheap chrome. but if good engineering is defined by a simple, cheap to manufacture, highly functional product, then Gas Gas wins hands down... because the KTM, though pretty to look at, is more or less a turd... okay, that’s unfair. it’s truly an amazing machine. It just isn’t fun to ride.... like my GG :ride:
...but you know what they say about opinions :blah:

I'm not necessarily going to argue with you, but I have always felt my GasGas was engineered exceptionally well. Now it does seem a bit flimsy, but this is because of weight. They've shaved almost everything they could shave. Heck, I can pick the thing up and carry it across the yard if I want. And I ain't a big dude. Anything that stripped down is going to look a bit 'cheap'. But from my perspective as an engineer (functionality is the primary requirement) the GG is masterfully designed and built.
As far as aerospace quality, I'm an aerospace engineer, and I'd much rather go to the moon in a Ford or a Toyota than in a Lockheed or Boeing. Trust me, 90% of that 'aerospace' mystique is just that, myth-tique.

My older Montesa 314 is a much better built machine than my GasGas- higher quality welds and parts- I intend to keep it complete and original.
My GasGas is far easier to work on however. I can strip the GasGas down to the frame before I could get the carb out of the Montesa. While I consider the GasGas to be nearly a disposable bike (mine has seen alot of use), it is the clear favorite to ride. I would much rather buy parts for the GasGas($$$ & time).
As you say, there is beauty in function- and the GasGas functions so well for maintenance and riding that I forgive any short comings in less expensive manufacturing. If the GasGas was built expensively, I probably couldnt have afforded one:(
