I was wondering what parts on my 2002 yz426f are aluminum. I want to try to polish them for the chrome look. SOo far all i see is the rear brake resevoir cover and kickstarter. Can i do the magnesium cover on the right side of the bike???

That technique is a little flawed. You should not sand in the same direction when going from one grit to another nor should you sand in swirls.

You sand in one direction until all original defects are gone then go to the next grade and sand at an angle to the first direction.

This way you can see when all marks from the previous grit are gone. If you go in swirls it's difficult to tell when all of the deeper marks from the rougher grit are removed.

i'm going to have to try the sandpaper technique. seems like that would knock the scratches down a bit lol. all i did so far was use the buffer pictured above and a mixture of mothers polish and some buffing compound and they were shiney but had a few scratches. for the swingarm and clutch cover i went with (scotchbrite coarse and fine) and this is the result so far. i might be getting the swingarm and clutch cover powdercoated along with my frame and subframe, so for now i'm just messing around a bit . thanks for the link.

yea, im with you. I want to try it but am scared i wont like the look. I have always prefered a more durable look to a "bling" look. Thing is school is taking all of my money and i am dying to do stuff to my bike.

man i know what you mean about school. I'm about to finish my first semester. I'm going for elementary education and in a couple weeks I'll be taking a full boat again. what i did was take a student loan out for some G's and I'll use some of that for my 2000 kx 250 rebuild. not the smartest thing to do but if ya wanna ride gotta do what ya gotta do lol!!!

haha yea. I havent taken out any loans and im going to be a junior in the fall. I just work when im not at school to make some cash. Its sucks and it is busy, but when i get to ride or do something fun, it makes the hard work worth it.

sweet. I did an old skid plate from my 1999 yz400f and it came out great. Ill post pics later. I think Im going to do all the little parts plus the silencer and subframe.Cant beat the look for the cost of some polish and sand paper.
