XR400 or XR650, both $1800, your choice?

I have located a 2002 XR400R, bone stock, and a 2000 XR650R, bone stock, both are asking $1800. Which would you take and why?

I'm a solid intermediate rider. 6'5" tall and 220 lbs. I will be riding in Southern Ohio in the hills, mainly woods, gas line right-of-ways, dirt roads, and ATV trails. I don't plan on racing. I just like to putt and trail-ride. I need something bomb proof and reliable, hence my choice for an XR Honda.

So, what would you do? I have to make my choice by this Saturday.

Disclaimer!!! I own and love my XR650R and L models.

The 400 is an excellent bike but slightly smaller than the 650. At your height, the 650 might be more to your liking but then either bike can get higher bars etc.

But I suspect the XR400 would be better for "putt"ing around. The XR650R tends to overheat if you go too slow. Can be helped by various things but it will still get hot. Evans Coolant solved most of my problems with over heating on the XR650R... but that was only a problem when on REALLY tight trails.

you are too big for that 400 and it'll be weasy compared to the BRP. Buy the BRP and love it the rest of your life.....

I've got both. Both are great.

The 650 has waaaaay more power. Could be good, could be bad, depending on your self control. The 650's got so much juice that you can be way over your head before you know it, and given it's size and mass, the stakes are higher when you do.

This year I think I'm keeping the 400 off road and the 650 on. That's my story today, anyway :prof:

Get both...I wish I had both...would make a great experienced buddy bike! (i wouldn't put any of my unexperienced buddies on a even a 400) But there are uncorkings for both that will make them great. Depends on your riding venue

I pulled the cash out of the bank, and, thanks to all you guys, I'm gonna get both! I've had a beer or a couple tonight, and my head is full of THUMP! That's not a bad thing on a Friday night, is it? (A pint or a few for you Aussies and Euro's) Geez! I gotta get on the road at 4am to pick one up and make the title transfer B4 it closes, then drive 4 more hours to get the other! Good thing is that my trip back will have a waypoint at a cabin I have in So. Ohio with access to 3500 acres of trails! OOOOO! Two bikes, no sleep, beer, trails...by myself. Wish me luck and thank you for all you're input! I'll post pics of the bikes, if I live, and have enough $$ for gas and food to get back home! Thanks guys! What a great forum!

Hey, anybody want to buy an XR400 or XR650? Ones gotta go! I have the feeling it might be the 65OH! But, we'll see!

I have a xr600 that i ride in southern ohio also. Im sure the 650 is really close to the 600. I really like my bike its heavy but you are big enough that you will get used to is very fast.If you get the 650 and dont like it you can always down grade faster than upgrade. it has alot of ass in every gear.

You know, So. Ohio has been stripmined for years. So, you have pockets of tight woods, then huge rolling open sections with big basketball rock turds and washouts. iT'S 50/50 so you need a versitile bike. And everything out there needs a bullet, so I need to sling the AK or AR on the back and have a kind enough ride to tollerate something that make noise on the hip as well. Know what I mean? Oh! And beer...forgot to mention that, capish?

At 6'5" and 220lbs, I thing the 650R will be the more comfortable bike. However, after buying both bikes, I would see which one is in better shape. If the 650R is mint, you have a clear conscience for selling the 400. If the 400 is better, the 650R can be easily sold and you still have something fun to ride.
