Stator for 86XR600R

I seem to have a very weak spark... So about how much will a stock stator for a 1986 XR600R set me back? Also what year and model bikes are compatible with mine, and where would be the best place to look if there are not any on Ebay?

P.S. looking for the cheap, not the performance stator (stock is fine for my purpose)

First off, BE SURE ITS THE STATOR. Get a multimeter and test the ground to coil resistance. Anything above 320 is toast. 0 would mean short..not good.

Second. Would you have the ability to rewind it your self...Its not that hard. Magnet wire,devcon and a little knowledge and bang...New stator.

A local starter, electric motor shop might rewind it for you. Those "mom and pop" shops have been slowly disappearing with the influx of cheap Far East motors and the like. But some may still be around.

If you even want to consider rewinding it your self, PM. I will get you some instructions and a line on the wire ($20) , and epoxy (Devcon, $10)

The stators up to 90 are a direct fit. I think that the later ones will fit as well, but the wiring is different.

You can get a Ricky Stator for about $130, but I believe that the ignition winding is not new, only the lighting coil is new.

Forget Honda $300+.

Be sure to use high temperature epoxy.

I have a hard time believing this. I bought a R.S. stator for my old '87XR600R, BECAUSE of weak spark from the stator. I'm fairly positive it had NEW windings....

MBJR1, I would suggest that you buy a new stator (unless you rewind). Putting in used/ unknown parts is always a crapshoot. And, how much more $$ will it really cost compared to buying used? My '87 left me stranded too many times, too far from home, because of the stator.....Do ya feel lucky?

You say you seem to; how do you know you have a very weak spark in the first place? What are the symptoms of your problem? Lets figure that out first before we all decide you have a bad stator. Unless you are just looking for a good excuse to throw some money at your bike.

Likes me says b 4....Multimeter connects to the coil bone...Much resistance...Bad...No resistance...bad...bikie no run...Resistance just right...Problem elsewhere.

So far we just grounded the plug on the head and cranked it, it had a weak yellow spark. We used my plug in his 92 XR600, did the same thing and it was a decent blue spark.

It was a crude test, but didn't have a multimeter on hand... I'm ruling out the plug wire for now cause it looks brand new, think it was recently replaced, plug was good also. Also checked the carbs thoroughly, jets are right size according to Eddie Sisneros (AKA burned), the floats seem to be working properly and the needle adjustments were right on.
