What's the use for the plate washer?

The Yamaha relay arm has a thin (1mm?) washer between the bearing and oil seal. Does anyone know why they use this?

Disclaimer: my friend lost one of his while putting new bearings in, and he's thinking he can put everything back together without the thin plate washer seeing as how it does not set into anything, ride up against anything, provide a tight fit between the bearing and oil seal....

Anyone know other than "Yamaha put that there for a reason." :prof:

When the rocker is tightened, it spreads out the force and provides a wider area. it also acts as a shim to fill the void. So yes, "Yamaha put that there for a reason." :prof:
