New owner of 86XR600 got ?s

Recommended Posts

Picked up a pretty good looking 86XR600 bone stock with just a uni filter. Its a hard starter and only idles with the choke on half choke.Looking for a good starting point on this bike.

What jets should I run in the carbs?MJs and PJs

Only idles with choke half on.

Runs strong even with choke on half.

Plus what are some of the ways you guys start your 600s cold and hot.

Ive got a 92 600 and love it this 86 feels just as strong. Thanks guys.

In good shape the 86 is about 10% more powerful due to the dual carbs.

The weakness of the 86 is third gear.

Sounds like the carbs need a good cleaning.

One of my friends had an old dual carb 600. Started OK cold or hot, but heaven help you if it died soon after a cold start. Almost impossible to get going again if it was just a little warm.

Sounds like the pilot jet is clogged. Take the carbs off and give them a good cleaning. Tunning these carbs can be a bit of a pain since there is a main jet and a secondary jet and 2 needles. These bikes are bullet proof so enjoy for a long time. If it has been sitting you may want to grease everything up. :prof:

A good ruinning 86 will outrun a good running 90s model for three reasons, the older ones had a higher static compression (because of the dual port head), The dual carb set-up right is far superior for power than the single carb, and the cam on the 80's ones was hotter. All guys who use to race the XR600Rs in the woods or desert would retrofit a 86 head and dual carbs.

On the carb and running with the choke on, that means it is super lean. Go up two sizes on the pilot, and one step on the main and see what happens. Make sure to first thougherly clean the stock jetted carbs and kae sure there isn't a problem with them in that way.

:bonk::confused:? I remember that nice "feature" on my 83 XL 600 ! If it did it at a light, might as well walk it to side of road or better yet where no one is watching you try to restart it .

I was dissapointed though when I bought mr XR650L and was like..... :prof: Where's the power ???

The old XL had a LOT more midrange, even with the 650 jetted right and with a exhaust system on.

If I remember right, didn't the L carb open 1st and then after about a 1/3 of the way up slide travel the second one would begin to open ?
