When checking the oil, do you screw the dip stick in all the way, or just dip it to the threads? I had always screwed it all the way in, then removed it, but my Clymer manual says not to screw the dip stick in to check the oil level.

Don't screw it in. Just let it sit at the top of the threads.

I just changed the oil in my bike. I put in 2 Quarts (read: quarts) and it did not even show on the dipstick. I ran the bike until warm and rechecked. Nothing there. SOOOOOO..... i added about 1/4 of another quart and it came up 1/3 of the way into the hash marks.

2.25 quarts is the safest bet.

That's what mine usually ends up being.

I screw it in but i always set mine to the top of the hash marks so the difference is only a little. NEver read the manual to see what it says. Just thought you always screwed in, only 1/2 inch difference

Mine holds 3 qts excatly. I have a Jagg oil cooler on the bike which increased the oil volume.

I found something interesting today that reminded me of this stale thread. You guys are going to love it...

I was perusing one of the sections of an XR600 manual I downloaded and while looking for a torque value, I stumbled upon the listed oil capacity and it wasn't 2.06 quarts. It was 2.4 quarts. The problem is that whoever scanned the manual also took the liberty of not including the cover, so I don't know what years it is for. Based on the pictures inside, I would have to guess it's for the single carb late '80s XR600s.

Mine has always taken over 2 1/2 quarts. I don't screw the dipstick in when I check.

I finally caved into peer pressure and instead of putting in 3L like I usually do, I only put in 2.5 L when I changed my oil (and filter) on the weekend, and it brought it 3/4 of the way up the dipstick towards the top mark.

My 08 manual says 2.06 or 1.95L. Though I've been more of a 2.25 qt person over the years. My first oil change on the 08 I measured it to see what they had in it because I was getting a full reading all the time hot or cold so I figured it was going to be higher. Turned out to be 3 quarts.

Last oil change i put about 2 and us quarts in mine, and it spit up a little bit into the air box.

So i will be sticking with a tad over 2 for my oil changes.
