XR650L Oil Capacity Poll

As requested, I'm starting a capacity poll. There seems to be much debate on how to check the level, and how much should be in there.

The service manual states "2.06 qts. at oil filter change".

Vote for the quantity closest to what YOU beleive is correct.

3 Quarts (Liters in Canada), not a drop more. Actually I'd think anything between 2 3/4 to 3 quarts is good.

Nope, a Liter is less than a quart.

1 quart = = 0.95 liter

So, 3 Liters = 2.85 quarts

Maybe I didn't clarify it properly.

When we buy oil here in Canada, it comes in Liter jugs. When you buy it in the United States, you buy it in quart jugs. The "jugs" look very similar, and to the naked eye they look to be about the same size.

So, in Canada when I refer to a "quart", I actually mean a Liter. So when I say I put "3 quarts" in my bike, I actually mean 3 Liters, which when converted, is actually 2.85 quarts.

i think alot matters in how you drain it, if your the type like me you drain it when the oils warm and you let it sit for 15mins while you run and do something else. I dont see the big debate here as this should really be a thread to show HOW TO CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL as per the manual. If your doing that correctly then how much doesnt really matter. I dont see honda with a discrepency in manufacturing their dip sticks so use your stocker, NOT the temp gauge, and get it to the top of the hash marks per the manual. im sure someone will quote the manual soon as im too lazy to do that LOL

Here are some facts....oh, wait not facts......

There is more oil in a Liter then a Quart!

33.8 fluid OZ in a Liter.

or

.946 Liters to a Quart or 946ml in a Quart

Right, which means there's 0.946 Liters in a quart.

0.946 ml isn't a Liter.

1000ml is a Liter, therefore 0.946ml is less than a quart.

What's so hard to understand about that?

32 OZ in a Quart. 1000ml in a Liter.

3 Liters would be 101.4 OZ or 3.169 Quarts! Not 2.85 quarts.

It does not matter if it is Liters or Quarts you have one to manny. 2 Liters is perfect at oil/filter change.

Hey guys, I'm hoping we don't get mad at each other over this. The poll already shows that most take more than the manual states. I think that was the main point of the poll to begin with - to prove there's some kind of real, not imagined, discrepancy. I doubt there's that many of us who don't know how to change and check our oil levels:prof: Maybe we should turn our attention to figuring out why it is that some bikes take more than others, if it's even that important at all. When I first posted about this topic, I mainly wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious. Thanks to this poll, I now know I'm not:applause:

I have a couple of observations for changing oil on XR600's and XR650L's.

1. The Honda amount does not fill the bike to the top of the dip stick.
   
2. you can get a little more oil out by tipping the bike from side to side and other gyrations.
   
3. Measuring the oil on these bikes seems to be more art than science. for example the only way that I can get a repeatable reading is to ride the bike for at least a few miles. Idling just doesn't do it.
   

At a point right near the top of the dipstick the oil will drain down the tube to the head. The dip stick will never show more than height of that tube.

Contrary to what some here might believe, some oil is sold in liter containers here in the states.

Very important point.

Although I am starting to lean toward 2 1/2 qts. myself.

I don't shoot for the very top of the dip stick markings. I try to be about 1/2 to 1 inch from the top. That leaves a little extra room for a poor reading. If I measure more than one inch it's time for some oil.

When I change my oil I drain and refill. I get it to about the middle of the dip stick. That takes just about what the manual says. I then take it for a quick couple of mile spin around the neighborhood and top it off.

when i said something about measuing with the dipstick to the top i meant to the top of the hash marks, which is not the top of the dipstick for sure. only what is meant to be full.

i dont know the difference between a US and UK gallon but i guess thats what the difference is. Here in US we do it our own way baby!!

im drinking my water here (costco) 1.0 litre and it says right on it and i quote..."1 quart 1.8 fl oz (1.0 litre)" so 1 litre would = 33.8 fluid oz. SO i find an online calculator and put in 33.8 oz and it says it is one litre, FLUID OZ that is so lets forget the differenece in US vs other calculations and go on with it.......CHECK IT ON THE DIPSTICK!!!!

I don't ride my 650L much and changed the oil (along with the filter) for the 3rd time last weekend. I looked up in the manual (Honda) and it said the capacity is 2 quarts. After putting 2 quarts in, rode around the block, and checked it, the oil was at the very bottom of the dip stick. It took another 1/2 quart to get it up to the middle of the dip stick.

I go with 3 do to alot of hw driving 85 miles round trip a little more oil in there makes me feel good ..
