Synthetic oil

Recommended Posts

I have a 2007 650L with 1500 miles on it. I want to change oil and was going to put synthetic in it. Should I wait till it has more miles or is it ok to do now, and if so what weight are you guys using? Thanks.....Tony

Hey Tony, welcome to TT!

If you are going to do synthetic, it's my opinion that i'd wait untill 3k. miles.

Your engine IMO opinion is about 1/2 way broken in.

Given that, I dont use synthetic in anything I own. Only because my thought is if you change the oil(using dino.)and filter every 1k. miles.... That engine is going to last a LONG time. Synthetic for me is not worth the extra expense.

Rotella synthetic is a favorite here among some of the guys. In my area it gets over 100 deg. in the summer and I will use 20w-50. In the winter I use 10w-40. Honda lube BTW.

Rich.

I use Mobil 1 15w50 in my PIG (cheap and available almost anywhere), changed over at around 2500 miles . Although I dont know what it would hurt changing at 1500 miles. It made my clunky feeling transmission shift wayyyyy better than the Honda dino oil I was using.

I waited until about 4K mi to change to synthetic, I run mobile 1 10-40 in winter and 20-50 in summer. Price differance, wow :prof: , but its only two quarts right. I would be caught dead running synthetic in my trucks.

...i'm pretty new to this board and wasn't sure if the "best oil" thread(s) wud start a heated debate or not...or how many times it's been rehashed...

BUT...

oil selection within motorcycle compatible oils if changed every 1000 miles or less is not going to make a big difference in wear...some oils allow better shifting...even lower operating temps

that being said...

thumpers in general are known to put extreme shear forces on oils breaking them down rapidily...we're talking after the first five hours of operation they are no longer what the lable states...offering significantly reduced lubrication

synthetics do hold up better to these shear forces but not buy much because of the extreme application... soooooo...i opt for the synthetic...and the heavier the better located in steamy H-Town.

wus running Redline 20-50 when Cyclegear had it for $6.99 a quart but they raised the price to near $13!!! :bonk:

will probably order a case of Amsoil and give it a try

:prof:
