New YZ400F rider!

Hey TT fans! I just purchased my first dirtbike, a 1998 YZ400F. I bought it with a few things already done to it, such as:

-FMF power core IV full system exhaust
-Applied Trip clamps
-Pro-taper bars
-K&N filter
-JD jet kit (unsure of the jet sizes just yet)
-excel black wheels with the spokes trued and zip tied

I added an MSR scorpion pro clutch lever and new (stock) throttle tube and grips since buying it as well as getting the forks and rear shocks serviced with new seals and oil, and the stearing head serviced.

So far i absolutely love this bike! its way faster than my quad(honda 400ex with a 440 kit on it). im still getting used to the differences in riding styles between quads and bikes but its alot more fun! i have looked for a couple weeks now and i have made myself a list of things to do to my bike to improve on an already kick ass ride. i would like to put it up here and see if anyone would put their 2 cents in and tell me if i would be wasting my time or if its a good idea.

-new bearings and bushings in rear suspension linkage.
-new spring for the rear with .60 spring ratio insted of the stock .54(im 260 lbs and 6'3")
-a 120 rear tire dunlop 739g i believe it is. probably match the front with the same 739 just not a g compound.
-new seat preferably of the "tall" variety
-hot cams intake and exhaust cams(w/auto decomp)
-valves serviced at the same time
-Zip-tye(sp) mod for carb
-brass fuel screw
-12 or 16 oz steahly FWW
-new counter balancer key

all in all this will get me where i want to be for a while with eventual mods of white plastics and a one industries white camo kit, new linkage in the rear and upgraded springs in the front with new dampers. i would like to change out the whole assembly for the shock in the rear but so far i cant find any manufacturers that make a complete replacement for our bike.

Do a leak down check to check the piston and rings. Might as well put new rings in while the top end is apart for cams and such. Put a new cam chain chain on the list too, it's cheap insurance. After you respring the rear, spend the money to respring the forks also, at 260 they are way to soft for you and the bike will be real unbalanced after you stiffen up the rear. Sound like it should be a rocket when your done - Enjoy :prof:

Well, welcome. :prof:

There is no complete replacement rear shock that you're going to find practical, although Ohlins probably makes one. Yours is 100% rebuildable, however, and any decent suspension specialist can do it for you.

Unless you are going to spend all of your time riding on pavement or clay packed so hard it looks like concrete, DO NOT use a D739 front tire.

Congrats on the "new" ride, and welcome to the 2-wheeled world!
I bought my '99 400 new, still occasionally riding it, just a couple times a year though. Great bikes, them.:-)

So, Grayracer, finally put new tires on my 400 after 4 years (that's only 10 or so rides though) but like cuvalaj, I've been using D739's . . . . if that's not good, what do you suggest for intermediate to hard pack?

The Dunlop 745 works much better in intermediate soils than the 739 (Dunlop intended it as a replacement for that tire) while still doing a good job on hard pack.

I like the dunlop 952's. good for both hard and the laom and it doesnt wear out as fast as the other tires I have tried.

I Checked out the Ohlins website and the only thing they make specifically for my bike is the fork springs, which i was planning on getting through my friend at 74motorsports who has some connections with Race Tech, ill get the front and back through him probably by the end of the week next week. im thinking a .60 rear and a .48 or .49 front will be good for my large size. the rear shock ohlins has for MX is pretty sick but i would need custom linkage i think to make it work so ill just rebuild the stocker when it goes bad. :prof:

thanks for the heads up on the tires i almost bought those two today and now i think ill try the D745 for S*&%s and grins.:bonk:

You will love stiffer springs, best money I ever spent on my bike. Keeps the rear up high in corners, you can go faster, yes indeed, if you are like me and over 200 pounds, deff get springs

You guys have a few things to earn about editing quotes :prof:

I like the dunlop 952's. good for both hard and the laom and it doesnt wear out as fast as the other tires I have tried.

My son runs a 952 all of the time, and it works well for him. The first one he had on his '06 lasted a year and a half and wasn't really worn out even then.

The quote tags are what keeps the quotes in their own boxes. There is one at the beginning and end of each quote, and they look like this:

[QUOTE} quotation [/QUOTE}

I substituted a "}" for the correct "]" bracket onthe end so that the tags would display properly. Everything between those will appear as in a quote box.

The "begin quote" tag can also contain the name of the person quoted:

[quote name='cuvalaj']

as well as a clickable pointer back to the post quoted:

[quote name='cuvalaj']

When you cut sections out of the post, you have to be sure not to remove any of the square bracket symbols "[]" from the tags, or you end up with what you got.

There. Now you're an expert. :prof:
