So I rode my 2007 YZ450F for the first time on Saturday. It was a blast! It was pretty muddy, but I couldn't wait any longer. Long story short i was riding in a plowed field and layed the bike down while I was turning at about 3 MPH. It was muddy, so no harm was done to the bike. I picked it up and started riding again.

After a minute or 2 I started to smell something burning. I look down at my FMF Megabomb header and some of my brand new Shift Recon pants are stuck to it! I just bought them last week... I was not very happy to say the least.

My question is is there anything I can do to wrap my header or put a heat shield on it at all? I don't want to burn all of my pants on this header, or worse end up melting my skin to it.

Also, will this damage my header in any way?

Thanks!

You can get header wrap at the local auto parts store. It comes in a roll that is about 1"-1 1/2" wide and will greatly help reduce the chances of this happening again.

You can also get a carbon fiber pipe guard that will fit. Will protect as well as serve as a heat shield.

Header wrap is effective, but ugly. If you are handy with sheet metal, get a sheet of stainless steel or aluminum from a metal supply house (look in the scrap bin), fab a couple of little stand-offs to rivet to the back side of it, and clamp it on the pipe.

The only damage any of this (including burning your pants) will do to the header is to the finish.

Do you know who makes them or where to look?

Thanks,

The company is E Line. I just called them, Unfortunately they don't make a carbon fiber cover for the 2007 Megabomb yet. He said FMF changed the design for the 2006 to 2007. The guy i talked to said that they would have one soon. Maybe in a month or two or sooner. I might wrap it for now and get that cover when it comes out.

My pants are free-ride type pants and they are baggier than I normally wear everyday, but either way this can be solved. I have always worn free ride duds...

I believe that Moose makes a CF shield as well. I purchased and E-line for my power bomb and was really dissapointed in the fit. Sent it back the next day. FMF also makes a "universal" shield that they will sell you.

Try P3 they might have a carbon fiber header guard that will fit. They can most likely custom made you one if they don't have it. P3 use to make all the carbon fiber for E-Line until E-Line outsourced the production to China. P3 is better quality that's made in the USA and costs less.

Do you know what the part number was that you ordered. I have the same setup, so it should work...

I ordered the Moose carbon fiber / Kevlar heat shield made by E LINE for my Megabomb today. We will see if it fits... If not I will just send it back and wrap the header in header wrap.
