yep - you're only talking 37 watts total there.

if you convert to DC, and run the dual 13 watt HID lights - you should also be fine - you might be down to 35 watts or so.

the trail tech hid lights are not DOT legal

i'm gonna try a single PIAA 004X, running it AC , and see how that works

remember - making a YZ into a street bike is taking a full on race machine and doing just enough to make it pass an inspection - barely. not a good bike for commuting - especially at night. I've never riden my YZ at night yet.

Gray - have you tried to see if a WR flywheel will actually fit the angle and therefore bolt on to a yz crank yet?

just one last question...I'm assuming running the two 13w HIDs is going to be brighter than a single 35w halogen...right?

Be advised: The headlamp will HAVE TO BE DOT approved in order to pass in CA. You can switch it over after (if) you get it plated.

So why isn't it recommended to use the rechargeable battery packs like the ones that come in the Baja Designs kit? I was thinking about getting the kit from Wheeling and replacing the AA battery pack with one or two Baja Designs batteries (one by itself or two in series). That should make the headlight brighter if I'm running led turn signals and brake light. Or am I wrong here?

Series wiring will either not make the light brighter because the HID ballast board will limit the voltage, or doubling the input voltage will cause the unit to fail. Parallel wiring will double the run time on a single charge.

A battery only system could work, but it has its obvious limitations.

Ah, I see. I was just going to use a regular light, not HID. I thought I could get the stator to keep the batteries charged and the lights would run off the batteries only. On my XR650R with a Baja Designs kit, the battery is able to power all my lights with the bike off for hours. And they are bright. It has a 55w headlight with led signals and brake light. I figured the 35w stator for the 450 would be enough to at least keep the battery charged.

Look at it like this:

Supplying 50w at 12v requires just over 4 amps of current. An 8 amp/hour battery will do this for 2 hours.

A generator capable of providing 35w at 12v will produce almost 3 amps. That leaves a deficit of one amp for the battery to cover. With the generator supplying the 3, the battery could support the 1 amp drain for 8 hours.

Milli-amps are 1/1000 of one amp. (0.001) 0.001 X 700 = 0.7 amp

be advised, according to others who live in calif, it's damn near impossible to plate a new bike there now. in fact, bikes that were legally plated for years have been getting notices to turn in their plates, that they won't be legal anymore. only real choices are to plate the bike in another state, and just ride it in calif, or you MIGHT be able to register the bike in calif after plating the bike in another state first.

joco - 2005 is a totally diff system. i would contact trail tech or E-line to see what products they have. This thread is only about the 06 and up bikes

i had my rhino street legal and i use to drive it to work everyday, it was great. i sold it though. now i ride the R6

We are slowly loosing our freedom here in AZ because of those money stuffing lobbiest sob's. In a short time just about all of our ohv areas are going to be closed and all that is going to be left are roads!

I was wondering if you know about older yz 426 mods for running lights. I was told that a wr stator would do the trick. Also some mod on cdi is necessary and is simple so they say. what do you think.

That is true, but I'm not familiar with what needs to be rewired.
