Hitting reserve at 50 miles - 650R

Recommended Posts

I ran out of gas on the way home from work today and had to hit reserve with 50 miles on the stock tank. What the??? All of it was on the road, in town. I know there is some fuel on the left side of the tank that can be moved to the petcock side, but does anybody know about how much stays over there? I didn't try that trick. I just flipped it on reserve while on the go and motored on. I was just really surprised to hit reserve at 50 miles...that just sucks.

I have been looking at the 4.3 gallon Clarke tanks in natural so I can see the fuel level. I don't really like how they turn yellow though. How long does it usually take before they really start yellowing???

The Clarke tank is pretty much yellow from the beginning. 25mpg is what I get in the dirt, on the Hwy. should be a good 20% better. :excuseme:

Iget 50mpg 15/40 gear uncorked.In tucked position about 70-75mph .

I can get as far as 65miles before reserve.

There is in the top of the tank a clear tube that prevents you from completly filling tank maybe 1/3 gallon it can be pulled straight up and out.

I went with the Clarke tank in red. If you're on the road there's still a lot of fuel on the left when you hit reserve. Flop it over on the side to get some (not all) of the fuel over to the right. Run the bowl dry first or you'll end up flooded. I've gotten mileage as low as the teens riding off road.

I get 60 to reserve on my little alu super moto tank. You should get quite a bitt more, maybe jetted to rich and or float to high (spilling out over flow) when leaned over. The only time I get that kind of mpg is offroad (big hills, heavy throttle)

I've got a 175 main, 68s slow with HRC tip, unplugged box and open carb insulator. I'm at about 500ft. Not sure about the float level, but I've never noticed any gas come from the overflow.

Like I said earlier, I know the tank isn't completely empty because it was all on the road and I didn't lean it to get the gas from the other side. This was just the first time I had run out and aexpected a little more range. I had been filling up between 40-45 miles and it usually took just a little over a gallon. This time I decided to wait and see where I would have to hit reserve...I just didn't expect it to be so soon.

I know its no 650r,but my 2 carb 86 XR600 gets better mpg than that by a long shot,XRs only did the motor back in 93-94,so having it tuned/jetted by the experts must of helped.Sounds like you need to set-up your carb, what mods have been done so far...

I jsut finished uncorking my XR650R. the only thing i have extra on top of uncorking the bike is a filter cover screen kit. On my first ride with the bike this way I got 66km not miles until I hit reserve. I'm running a 175 main, 68s pilot and a b53 needle. I was riding the bike pretty hard though

I usually get 55 miles of road riding before I hit reserve. Mines's uncorked and rejetted but otherwise stock. What kind of gearing are you running? Is your tire fully inflated? If I take it easy when I launch from a stop I can start getting into the low 60s before reserve, but where's the fun in that?

I'm running stock gearing. I just filled up last night and checked my mpg and it was a little over 30mpg. That's probably not too bad considering all of those miles were in town with frequent stops. I'm a little heavy handed on the throttle as well. There's no use in having all that power if you can't play around with it. :prof:
