FMF Q Help---got hosed on Ebay

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

I've just spent the past hr searching threads and I can't put together the info I need. I know this has been beat to death but I need help.

I recently purchased a "Q2" for my 400 off ebay, well I got it and it's a regular "Q" ---I got a great price and it's brand new so I don't want to re-sell it. But the bike seems way loud and I'll get nailed here in Michigan if I'm over 94db's.

Is there any new solution to quiet down the Q muffler? Insert, new packing material, anything? It sucks to buy a new pipe and then realize you'll only be able to ride with it 1/2 the time:banghead:

Anybody know what DB's the Q will blow on a 400?

Thanks!

FYI, FMQ does thier decibel readings at IDLE.

Yeah, I hate that, in Michigan it's at half throttle, I assume it's that way everywhere?

Ken--I saw that insert this morning on their website. I'll def. give them a call I've just been waiting to see if someone might have already found a solution.

Thanks guys, hopefully someone may have an idea.

The standard is different for every bike but Michigan should be using the same standard as everywhere else.

I had the first generation "Q" on my 04', you can get a packing pillow right from FMF specifically designed for the can and it comes with easy to follow instructions... I think when I bought it a 2 or 3 years ago it was $16...

Here it is in the TT store - "Q" Pillow P/N, 27-1968, $25

This should get you down pretty close to 94db, I used to pass sound checks with it at the races where the limit was 96db and that was with a tach and probably 1/3 throttle...

I have a 00 WR400 with a Q. It had got loud with the original packing. I repacked it with Silent Sport (I think they were bought by FMF) packing. it is a stringy kind of packing vs. the 2 stroke fiberglass blanket looking stuff I have used in the past. I went from over the limit to around 93db at the last sound check.

Kirk and Don Thanks! That was the info. I was hoping to find.

It sounds like changing the packing should get better results. I would hate to have to put my stock exhaust back on for every Enduro race or park I ride at.

I have the FMF Q on one of my WR400s and the Q2 on the other. IMO, with both pipes freshly packed, the Q2 is the louder of the two pipes - has a real bark to it, but it also produces more power.

Really? That makes me feel better about the situation then.
