How would a 06 Yz 450f do in the woods?

Just wondering if these bikes are very woods friendly...thinking of buying one?? Let me know what you guys think??

theyre geared pretty tall stock. i think mine has a 48 rear stock.

i think it'd do fine in the woods, but be more at home on the track with a 50t. :-)

I think it depends on your definition of "woods". If you mean normal trail riding, they do just fine. They're light, fast, and a lot of fun. But if you mean double black diamond, first gear only, tilt the bike between the trees and ride over logs and stuff, then the YZ will suffer the same handicap as any MX bike: Tall gearing in first gear and a close ratio trans.

If you're looking at Woods only and you don't race, I'd stay away from the YZ and look at WR for the gearing. You can cheat the gearing a bit and put on a flywheel weight but after riding a WR I'm doing the mods to my YZ450F now. Wish I read thru all the posts first.

They do great with a little tweaking. I put on a 9oz flywheel weight and it helps. If I exclusively rode nothing but tight, tight woods, I'd probably gear it down a touch, maybe up 2 teeth on the back sprocket.

If you ride on trails that you drag your bike through more than ride it, they're not that good.

Ive got a stock 07 yz 450 and i ride mostly trails. The trails never do the bike justice as usually you cant get past 2nd or 3rd gear. If you only ride trails you really arent using the bike to its potential so its almost a waste. Although if you get out in the open or tracks its great. I previously owned a ktm 2 stroke and although the yz is heavier i like it in woods more

thanks guys ill probably stay clear of the 450....Ive been riding ktm's and rm's 2strokes but i just can't find anything worth the money...i usually don't have this kinda trouble...thanks guy's!

One of the biggest benefits of the YZ 450 would be its reliability. Thing is dang near indestructable from what the owners have been saying on this site.

I know that my 2000 426 is a great bike, but it is a handful in really tight woods.

IMO the yz250f makes a much better tight woods bike than the 450. Of course I like my ktm 300 even better in the tight, technical, crawling over trees, rocks... But, on the mx track, the 450 rules!

If you want a Yamaha but not a 450, I'd say find a YZ250 2-t. Awesome woods bikes.

I agree, I have an 06 450 set up for the tight stuff 53 rear sprocket, Ims tank Scotts stablizer, brush guards and 18" rear wheel. Its fun in the tight stuff but my 03 YZ 250 is much easier to ride and Im not as tired at the end of the day. It too is also set up for the tight stuff. IMS tank, 52 rear sprocket, scotts stablizer, brush guards, and 18" wheel.

But my 18 year old son disagrees with me. Go figure
