Quick Freeflo vent tube dumb question

Hi, just joined this forum a few days ago. I got a 97 XRL650 with an Acerbis tank. The old one-way valve vent tube rotted away and fell off, so I am going to replace it with a Freeflo tube.

Which way is it supposed to go? Valve end close to the gas cap or stuck down the steering tube? The The Acerbis instructions are not clear on this point and I don't find any clues on the internet.

I am a little confused. My one-way valve only has about 2 inches of hose between it and the cap - nothing else. :thumbsup: Sounds like you just need a length of plain vent hose attached to the cap with the open end shoved down the steering tube.

The FreeFlo valve pipe has about 2 inches on one side of the valve and 8 inches on the other. I can blow air thru in one direction, not the other. It would be good if they printed an arrow or something on the tube, but there is nothing.

If I understood the function a bit better it would be easy! Is the purpose of the one way valve to let air come in to the tank as fuel is used, (and not come back out) or to provide an escape for pressure build-up in the tank?

Like I said - a dumb question, but there is nothing in the shop manual or Acerbis installation sheet.

Air is supposed to enter the tank through the tube to eliminate a carburetor starving vacuum. You should be able to blow into the tank but not suck from it. If you have a tube long enough to reach well into the hole in the triple clamp I doubt you would need the one way valve though. Just the tube should be enough to do the job and not spit gas.

Thanks - that is what i figured, but was not sure.

I still have a problem with gas dripping out of the bottom of the carb (something pretty common on this list) - I took the cover off and sprayed cleaner through the jets but it still is leaking. I thought the vent tube might have been a reason for the problem.

Don't have the answer for the leaking carburetor. Maybe the O-ring shaped gasket for the float bowl is not doing it's job or perhaps the float itself is stuck.
