There are some beautiful bikes here.

Hoping you guys can help:
What's the best way to know exactly what is needed to "plate" a bike?

I'm in Maryland.

I have gotten nowhere at all with the MVA. I was told that I need to just talk to a normal (auto) inspection station and they would tell me. Is that right?

Also, how did you go about picking your base model? I would love to get a KTM and while I know the exc is easy, I dont know feasible the others are. Same goes for other makers.

Any advice/ insight is appreciated.

Each state is a little different from the next, as far as requirements are concerned.
For example blinkers/turn signals are not required in Colorado...etc...
I wouldn't waste the time contacting a auto inspection station, instead try the state
OHV department or get in contact with some local dualsport folks to find out what
they did.

All I needed was headlight (low and high beam), tail/brake light, speedo, front and rear blinkers, mirrors and a horn. Some inspection stations are stricter than others.Get your title taken care of first before you spend any money on the conversion. Good luck!

Thanks man!

What bike did you start with?

And I assume the title was NOT stamped with "Off-Road Only" or something equivalent?

Both of my dirt bike's titles had "Off-Road Only" and now they say MC. All I can say is that it HELPS to know people........ :smirk: Even though I knew people, it still was a PITA. Just a FYI...if you try to get a plate with your title saying "Off-Road Only", MVA's system will flag the person behind the counter. Its a new full proof system that they implemented so that dirt bikes can not be plated. Remember...theres always cracks in every system. I was told by everyone that both of my bikes could not and would not be plated. With tons of research and determination I proved otherwise.

Interesting. Thanks for the info!

Would you be able to provide me with more deatils re: the "research and determination"? I plan to get a KTM exc/ xc/ mxc that have varying degrees of being close to street legal, but I dont want to get a bike that I cannot get plated.

I am very new and this would be my first bike. I know very little about the MVAs tagging process, but believe I know what I need to do to the actual bike: Baja Designs kit to fill in the missing components, inspection, insurance. I read somewhere else that if I have the inspection and proof of insurance it is a lot easier to deal with the MVA for tagging.

Feel free to PM if you prefer.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but thought it may be helpful to post what I have learned for other Maryland riders.

I spoke to an inspection station who led me to believe that with the inspection cert I could get any bike plated.

I then called our local MVA twice and spoke to Customer Service. Both people I spoke to said that with a title (doesnt matter what it says), inspection certificate and proof of insurance they would issue tags. I asked both reps multiple times if they were confident in the info they were giving me. They both said yes, but one confirmed with a "supervisor". The supervisor agreed with the 2 customer service reps but suggested I speak to the Automotive Safety Enforcement Division of the State Police (at the Glen Burnie MVA, I believe --- 410-768-7388). He also confirmed that with a title, inspection cert and proof of insurance I could get any "off-road" bike tagged. He said that essentially the saftey inspection will override any original manufacturers intended purpose restrictions and is verification that the bike is now suitable for street use.

So, it sounds like in MD you can slap a dual sport kit on and get plated fairly easily.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS JUST WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD AND HAVE NOT YET COMPLETED THE PROCESS.
