05 yz 250 suspension vs 06 and newer

Recommended Posts

I purchased an 05 yz with less than 8 hrs with pro circuit pipe,v-force reeds, for 2500 did`nt realize that 06 had a major fork, shock upgrade, hate to spend the bucks for revalve for hs/mx on outdated suspension, should I sell it,should have no prob.for what I paid,or can I buy the 06 and up forks and shock reasonable somewhere, any suggestions?

looks like we are the same age and you may be a whole lot better rider than me...but i dont think the difference in the shock and forks will be that noticeable to you...i had a 05 yz250 and i really liked the suspension in the stock form....i really liked the bike a lot and that motor is awesome power....wish i would have kept it...but it was a handfull for me trying to ride mx with it...i now have a 06 yz125 and love it...just wish i could borrow a little of that 250 power every now and then:ride:

I have riden the 05 and 06 back to back and can first hand say the 06's forks are better by a good amount. The shock felt better too but not as much of a difference scale as the forks.

I have heard of people fixxing the 05 forks to perform well and if I had a 05 I'm sure I could make them work good, it would just take a little work.

I think you mean you sent your 05 forks and shock to fc and had them revalve/spring them is that correct. If that can make them as good as the 06 and newer thats cool but,It is my understanding that the o6 is a copy of the honda fork, apparently a more advanced design according to a suspension person I spoke with, can any techies out the shed some light on this before I spend 500 to 1000 bucks for a revalve for hs/mx

IMO you would be wasting your money on a newer suspension to run it stock. In 06 Yamaha put speed sensitive forks on their bikes. The fork design was similar to the 05 forks, but the speed sensitive valving made them much different. The 06 valving will not fit in an 05 fork. 06 forks will not work properly with 05 tripleclamps, so you will have to use 06 triple clamps. Yes 06 and newer suspension is better than the 05 in it's stock form. However, all stock suspensions are a compromise. Yamaha has to sell a bike that is plush enough for a novice to enjoy, but stiff enough for a faster rider to enjoy. The end result is a suspension that kinda works for everyone, but isn't the best for anyone. When you get a suspension revalved it is valved for your ability, weight, and style of riding individually. The result of properly revalved suspension is vastly better than any stock suspension to date. My suspensions from 8 years ago that were revalved were better than the stock 06-08 suspensions. Revalving is also cheaper than buying a new suspension. A revalve for forks is typically around $200 plus parts and fluids so the total will be under $300. 06 forks on ebay typically go for around $500 used plus about $50 for shipping and then you will most likely have to put another $100 in replacing the seals, bushings, and fluids bringing your total up to around $650. You can have your forks and shock revalved for a little over half the price of what you will get newer forks for.

I think you should built up the 06 forks. Not that your 05 stuff is bad.

Here is my thought. Your already committed to spending some money to built the bike how you want it. If you build up your 05 stuff your always going to wonder how well the 06 forks would have been with the same effort. Lets be honest here...your spending dirt compared to a new bike no matter which way you go. Some of our local dealers charge more than the quoted figures for freight and set up.

I am assuming he wants to get the best suspension for the least amount of money. If he buys 06 suspension he will be spending money on just a stock suspension. To then have the 06 suspension revalved will cost the same as the 05 revalve and the end result will be very similar. I don't see the point in spending money on 06 suspension and triple clamps, to then spend money to have it revalved when revalved 05 suspension will feel pretty much the same as revalved 06 suspension.

KJ790. Your point is great.

I just responded in the way I would think about it. Not saying its true or even reasonable. I think th e06 and later forks had some design changes that might make them superior no matter what, but the parts list is long!

I dont think I am a great judge of this. The truth is I believe proper valving makes more difference than the proper design. I rode studboys 2002 with a before and after fork valving. The after forks were as good as anything out there.

I bought my friends '05 YZ250 that had been worked over by Race Tech on both ends, and he bought an '07 YZ250 that had been worked over by Enzo including the subtanks. Well, he wants his '05 back. We've swapped bikes several times and for me it's a no-brainer....Yamaha just got something right with the '05, it's subtle, but it's there. Maybe it's just my bike in particular (8 oz FWW and those SLP Power Pack plates are simply the best $30 I've ever spent on a mod), but regardless, I say keep your '05 and throw some goodies at it with all the money you're saving.

  • 2 weeks later...

I`m thinking for offroad the revalved 05`s would be fine, but on the mx track my old ass needs all the plushness it can get, especially after getting hit by a car 15yrs ago on my harley, which heriated a disk in my neck.
