Identify year of engine through serial number?

I am getting close to finishing putting my engine together. I had a cracked casing and needed to replace a bunch of stuff. I bought some side-covers from a 98 KX250 to go on my 99. 98 and 99 covers are the same part number.

I was buttoning everything all up and when i got to the last bolt ?

Something is wrong here. I am thinking the engine is a different year, but what year is it? I have the engine serial number. i searched and searched how to decipher it with no luck. Does anyone know how to tell what year the engine is through the serial number? KX250LE006646 I found one site that said the 10th number is the year, which would make the engine a 2006?

That's why my gasket kit came with two similar case gaskets, just one bolt was an inch away from the other.

There is no hole for the bolt to go through. Most of the schematics show a hole. Man i'm so lost right now.

I found this cover for a 98 to 00. The angle is a little off, but does this look like the right one? If so the one i have isn't the right year. I got it on ebay and the guy offers a guarantee.

Ok this what I know about this, the cover is older than the cases in you pics. My 91 uses the cover you have and the 99 doesn't. On the older cases there is a bolt for the big clutch cover and a bolt for the small clutch cover, on the newer ones a long bolt goes through both covers. The problem is I don't know what year they changed, you could check Kawasaki.com.

Did you change the right center case? And yes that second cover on the floor looks right.

I am so relieved. The clutch cover (inner) is definitely not a 98 as described. What's the best way to approach this, e-mail him and wait or dispute it?

No, i haven't changed the case yet. I have been buying all the parts needed to finish it. I installed them all. now i'm going to bring the motor to a shop and have them switch out the casing and put in new bearings. I wanted all the pieces to be there so they can put it together "correctly"

I have one more question. In the next picture i circled the shift fork. I got the collar that goes over the spring, but what holds it in? The little circle shows a shaft with a groove in it, should something be there? The reason i ask is, the fork is able to slide out and the gear hits where the spring goes. I believe this to be the cause of what happened. It seems like there needs to be something to hold the shift fork towards the center of the motor.

In that case witch clutch-water pump cover fits your new inner case, the one that you will have the shop put in? As far as buying stuff on ebay, not sure how to go about that. Alot of times people don't know what they have or are selling, a lot of this stuff look the same to most people. Good luck.

No, my new casing is like my old. The covers are definitely wrong. I edited the post above, does anyone know about the shift fork?

The collar that goes on the shaft and centers the spring also holds that in. I have been working on the 2000 and newer ones lately and those parts are a little different but I don't think anything goes in that groove. I think the groove is for the spring to snap onto.

So what holds the collar on? I bought a brand new collar, it slides on and can slide off if you shift.

I did, it doesn't show anything. I guess it will all work out when it's assembled.

Look at the very end of the shift shaft, the collar holds the spring centered and on the clutch cover there is a nubben that holds it all in.

I must be missing the nubben, whatever that is. Here is the schematic. It doesn't show anything other than the collar. On the picture you show, it looks like it's fastened somehow. On the diagram does part number 92152 hold 92143 on?

The nubben is in the inside of the clutch-water pump cover and lines up with the shift shaft. Not fastened and you can from the sprocket side push the shaft in any time the clutch cover is not on so I leeve the shifter on to stop that.

Yes, nothing holds it on except the clutch cover. Looks correct.

Looking for a little help.. I bought a kx100 a couple weeks ago it is supposed to be a 2004 model, but I don't think it is.i think the motor is totally different year, but I'm not sure. I've tried decoding the vin but haven't had no luck.  I am needing to find out for sure before I order some parts. The frame vin is-JKAKXTDC33a008399 and the motor vin is-kx100ce009802.  I will greatly appreciate the help!!!
