Guys, I need some basic info please.

If I install a 50 rear sprocket on my YZ250F, what do I need to do about the chain?

I know that some people will advise me that the stock chain is a piece of junk, so I should get a new one anyway. But I'd rather not do that now if I can avoid it.

* Can I just buy some additional links for the stock chain?
* Do I really need more length?
* Are these chains all pretty much universal or do I need to get Yamaha-specific chain links?
* Where do I get chain lengths?

I went into a Yamaha dealer who's obviously not real sharp on this subject, and he didn't have much advice that I could work with.

Thanks for any help.

The stock chain will fit it.

Sorry didnt notice all the questions on my first blurting. :)

Once you cut a chain, thats it. You just dont want to start
stiching chains together.

Like I said the stock chain will fit a 50T, barely

Yes they are pretty much universal. all 520's have the same link size, and you must use a 520 for our sprockets.

You get the chain size from the manual. The 02, and 03 are both listed on pg's. 2 - 13.

YZ250F_Rider,

Thanks for the info. Do you know if there will be any significant difference in bike handling or suspension if I have to pull the rear wheel up closer to be able to use the 50T sprocket with the original stock chain?

Nah, I cant feel any real change in suspension on the 02 or the 03. A new chain will need the adjusters up close, and will eventally stretch to mid travel (the sweet spot).

It does come out of the corners much better with the 50T. Much more peppiness.

I recently changed my sprocket from a 48T to a 50T with the same chain. The wheel moves forward a bit and I did have to change my sag (spring preload) adjustment.
Please check your sag to ensure that it is still good whenever you move your rear wheel. It makes a big difference. At the time I went from 98mm sag to 100mm sag and it was better for Hare Scramble.
