High Mileage Bikes, who's got the highest???

Recommended Posts

My 2000 650L is coming up on 36k miles. Probably not much, but commuted 500-600 miles a week for a year and half, when it was not raining. Only thing busted was the countershaft. Plenty of oil changes and a couple replaced rear tires. Other than that...runs like a champ.

So the high mileage guys, is the engine ALL stock?

In my friend's case, yes.

I think that post was before he did a bit of work on the engine. I remember his aftermarket front sprocket was made of a tougher steel than the shaft, and ended up damaging the splines. I think there was basically some cylinder work done also, but its not like anything blew up on him.

Call it a mid-life service :-P

That's why I always laugh when someone states that they're looking at buying a XRL with around 7,500 miles but is concerned about the "high miles".

Hell, just commute to work once or twice a week for a couple years and you'll get that. My '01 with only 9,500 has got a long way to go.

I put about 40K on a DR350 and it still ran nice when I sold it. I expected the same kind of miles from my xr650L but it dropped a valve seat at about 8K, I fixed that and stayed with the same piston etc. but then it started to smoke a lot at startup. Ran great just smoked when cold. I went ahead and did a full rebuild at 10K with hi compression piston. It runs like a raped ape now but still smokes on cold starts. I never have to add oil though. I don't know how the oil is getting into the combustion chamber, but it is. Kind of embarrasing but once she's warm it's clean and very strong. BTW, for sale. If any of you have the answer to the smoke, lemme know.:applause:?

I'm curious if the higher mileage guys are using synthetic or dino. NOT starting an oil debate, just wondering if there would appear to be a difference in engine longevity between the two different types of oil.
