Auto clutch???

Recommended Posts

how will it affect my hill climbs ? im seriously thinking about this product, and am researching it extensively :applause:

My Rekluse has saved my butt a few times on hills. It really helps when you bobble on a hill and have to let off the gas and then straighten up and stab the throttle to make it the rest of the way.

is it a hard intall? deos it require major surgery?

The standard z-start wasn't bad to install. The 'pro' version wasn't bad either. I will say that the 'pro' version could use better directions. They are not that great.

Tuning the standard z-start was easy once you learn the theory. I can't comment on the 'pro' yet. I just got it and haven't rode with it yet.

Great thread guys. Since I am dumping alot of money into my bike this winter I was also considering getting an auto clutch. I have heard the pro's, now lets here some con's. I dont mean that in a bad way, I just want to get the whole story before I spend the cash for one.

I'll start. No bump starting.

I have ridden a crf450 with a Rekluse a while back, and I seem to remember that you had to hit the kill switch to get it too upshift. Am I remembering correctly?

I am going to ride 90% mx this year and have heard that they are not the best for that. I was wondering why? They really sound like the 'cats meow' to me.

I have been using auto clutches off and on for about 4 years. I started with the efm on a 250f then put the z start on my 06 yz450f. I can tell you this, if they are set up correctly I don't think anybody short of James Stewart can work a manual clutch better. But, if your bike is not jetted right and is prone to stalling you will hate it. On my 06 it was prone to stalling. The problem was made worse with the use of the manual over ride set up. I think that set up makes the engagment a little erradic. I started using the clutch over ride alot to compensate but that was hard on the clutch and it got out of adjustment fast.

I now have it on my 08 without the barrel adjuster over ride and I absolutley love it! The 08 does not stall and the engagment is so good that I took my clutch lever off.

The moral of the story is this.. set it up correctly which means find someone who has been using one to help you install it initially and make sure your bikes jetting is spot on.

How much difference is there in the recluse vs. revloc clutches other than price? Looks like if you get what you pay for the revloc might be better. I had thought about one but like after the jetting changes and a little more seat time I am not sure that I would want to change what has to be the perfect engine/bike combo. What would that be you ask. KTM 530 xcrw so so sweet. Will I lose the engine braking that I have now? How do you like that if you lose engine braking? Just dont see how this bike could be any smoother.

With the Z-start Pro model you retain completely normal full manual clutch use if you choose to ride it that way. ..or you can just let the Rekluse do it all for you. I use mine as a combination of both. In the tight stuff I just focus on riding without clutching for the most part. I use the clutch when power shifting, when comng out of corners hard I'll feather it to keep the bike in peak power, and when hill climbing to keep the front end down if it starts coming up, in race starts, etc. You still shift like normal, the dude that had to use the kill switch to shift was doing something seriously wrong...I've never even heard of that before.

The install is easy.

usmcpaul I have the z-start for my 06. Some cons are no bump starting but an even bigger one is that your jetting has to be perfect, at least for an 06. I was going to get the zip-ty carb mod anyway from all of the good things I had read about it and now in retrospect I doubt that I would have been able to get the jetting to where it needed to be. Definitely research jetting and rekluse in the search function before you make any decisions. Another downside is that you can't get sloppy with your throttle hand. With a regular clutch when your right hand starts to fatigue you can compensate by pulling in the clutch through rough sections or turns. But with the rekluse when your going through the rough and you want to slow down without hitting the brake you close the throttle. When your really tired its easy to inadvertently twist the throttle a little for some undesirable results.

The advantages still outweigh the disadvantages by far. I like it so much that I wish I would have bought the pro version to begin with.

Haven't tried the Pro but have had the original rekluse since my '06 YZ450f was new. Gonna take it off this year. My only real complaint is that it eats power on big hill climbs. The problem is when the engine gets put under heavy load, the rekluse auto engages and prevents you from clutch ripping 2nd and 3rd gear to free up power. I have the override on mine and even perfectly set up its to slow and sloppy to keep momentum.

Compared to how many times its saved my ass climbing and going over logs and what not this is really small and would highly recommend to anybody.

The rev-loc system requires you to send your basket out and have some machine work done to it. Which means you could have down time and then you can't remove the auto-clutch when/if you trade your bike.

The Rekluse on the other hand doesn't require any machining and they come out in a matter of minutes.

Its a good mod for any bike IMO.

The Rekluse is slipping and putting traction on the ground. I bet you change your mind once you take it out. I took mine out this summer and had arm pump in less than 5 minutes....lol.

With the Pro model that problem is non-existant because you have full override ability. That's the beauty of the Pro model...you can use your clutch normally or you can just ignore it.
