Second Attempt at Installing GPR Stabilizer and Failed..Again. What am I Doing Wrong?

Recommended Posts

The post keeps sliding on the neck of the frame. The first time I kind of just put

it on there not knowing there was a certain way of doing it. It slipped... of

course. The second time I actually installed it according to the GPR's

instructions online. I thought I did it right. Well, I put the damper on the highest

setting and jerked the handle bars, and it slipped right off. Is there something

I'm missing? I'm starting to question how strong this set up is...especially in

race situations. Does anyone weld these posts to the frame? I'm lost...:busted:

BTW, it is a 2006 YZ450F. Thanks in advance.

Yep...I had one on my '06 like that. I absolutely hated it. I was too afraid to have the pinch bolts they provided dig into the stearing head too much. Its a pretty bad design if you ask me, not nearly enough security having it bolted on.

I think thats an easy answer. Mine has two small set screws on the sides of the post clamp. The set screws and not damaged my Steel neck. I believe you have an alum one. I am not sure if distorting will happen on it but I highly doubt it. Remember this is not cranked down on the neck. Just snug, with lock tight to prevent back out... I drilled a small pilot notch for the set screw to lay it.

You might ask Scott's' if they have one with the set screws in it.

They don't. Theirs is a clamp design with a tang extending back over the the frame to the bolt that holds the front of the gas tank. Since the steering head "tube" of the aluminum YZF is not actually tubular, the shape of the clamp section that fits over the head has to be machined to fit, and can only clamp on 3 sides of it. The tang anchors the assembly, and keeps it from shifting forward, or scrubbing side to side on the steering axis.

I just got mine. I'll put up a picture tomorrow.

I had the same problem(06YZ)........I finally got it to stick by following their instructions exactly.....which is: tighten the pinch bolt a tiny bit, followed by the 2 set screws a tiny bit, then the pinch bolt again and so on until tight. Basically you have to tighten the 2 set screws and the pinch bolt all evenly.

I also drilled 2 tiny divots to accept the set screws.

I would be interested in another type of post if someone knows of one?

You tell us.....Did you get it to stick?

Even if I do get it to stick, I'm not sure that I'll trust it during a race.

Will the Scott's mount fit my GPR damper?

Someone mentioned it mounts to the tank mount. Will it accommodate an IMS 3.1 gal tank?

What do you mean by "tang"?

Yes it will work with the IMS tank, I have one on my 08. I dont think the mount will work with the GPR, if I remember correctly the slot in the GPR arm is larger than the Scotts pin. The Scotts mount has a tab welded to the back of the bracket that comes down and mounts to the bolt where the tank bolts down. You may be able to get on Scotts website and see the bracket, if not chech BRP's website.
