YZ Exhaust Cam - Question

Recommended Posts

I have not done that mod but it is next. The stock yz exhaust cams are supposed to be fairly inexpensive and I have heard it makes a noticable difference.:busted:

i know all of this! i guess im wondering if it turns the wr motor more in the yz with a stronger hit. more low end

where does the power come on at more noticeably?

I have one on my DS WR and love it, it makes it wheelie easier too, however the e start is very picky now, when it's warm i need to use the hotlever to start every time, and when it's cold it needs chocke on and two slow twists of the throttle to start, if not it will crank and spit and sputter and won't start.

I picked up a modified exhaust cam (I assume is was retarded slightly) and a stock YZ intake cam. (I had no idea if its the same as a stock wr cam or not). I picked them up for $90 on ebay.

I had them put in and picked up the bike the other day. The throttle is a lot more snappier, It sounds and feels a bit more aggresive for sure. I haven't got to ride it yet though except for down the block and back. Maybe today I can get out if I can find somewhere with no snow.

Oh yeah, starting is now really really simple. It was stone cold yesterday and fired on one kick. I have to hold the choke half way out with one hand while kicking, but it fired two times cold on one kick. (I did it a second time later to brag to my roomate, he was unable to start his CRF450 at all after flooding it)

I am unsure if it will need rejetting though. I will see how it rides today hopefully.

OK after 4 different WR's I am thinking that it's time to do this mod so my questions are -

Do I need just the YZ exhaust cam while leaving my WR intake cam in? (It sounds as if the intake cams are the same)

The Hotcams YZ exhaust cam has issues with our auto decomp? (This is what I have heard in other threads).

OEM YZ exhaust cam is best option based on cost and performance?

Any hidden little tricks?

Thanks:ride:

thanks for the tip on the intake cams. Yes I would like to smooth out the power. the 450's have more juice than most humans can use on a motocross track. Most of what I ride is tight woods with some fast two track. I gotta practice a lot of throttle control, and in a two hour hair scramble, you can get pretty wore out.

I checked out the different stock cams and heres the deal. My 06 yz 450f has the following numbers, 5TA-12170-10-00, 5TA-12180-10-00. 05 and 06 WR have the same intake as my YZF, exhaust on 06 is 5tJ-12180-20-00, and 05 is 5tJ-12180-10-00. The 07 WR has different intake and exhaust, 5tJ-12170-00-00, 5tJ-12180-30-00.
