Recommended 4-stroke oil?

What brand & viscosity 4-stroke oil are you using, and why? P.S. - I have a '96 xr400r.

Klotz KL850 synthetic oil. It keeps operating temperatures down and makes shifting smoother. It was recommended to me by Gary Hazel of Thumper Racing. It is 20/50.

I have always used Castrol Act-Evo 10-40 winter and 20-50 in hotter months, it was recommended to me by a mechanic that has worked on xr's for over 20 years, just choose a high quality four stroke oil and change it regularly and your xr will be fine:ride:

I use Golden spectro 10/40 in winter and summer in Bellingham but in hotter summer climates I would go with 20/50. But like Border Bandit said, just use a high quality 4 stroke oil and you'll be fine.

Yeah but how does someone with little knowledge of oils know what is high quality and what isn't?

I am using the 300V MOTUL full synthetic 10/40 motorcycle oil. It was suggested to me by a motorcycle mechanic that has been using it with no problem.

I have used Cheveron Delo 400 diesel oil in my bike before and it is pretty good stuff. i switched to regular Chevron supreme 20w-50 for a while. Now i am using Mobil 1 10w-40 motorcycle oil. really good stuff.

Castrol GTX 20-50W. Because for over 30 years I have never had an oil related problem using it.

Amsoil. It lets the motor run cooler. It's great stuff, recommended to me by a 20 year user who's ridden dirt bikes for 45 years.

It goes in every vehicle we own.

Any oil that carries the JASO MA rating and is manufactured by a reputable company is a good choice. These oils do not contain friction modifiers and will not adversely affect wet clutches. Castrol ACT EVO carries this rating and works very well. My personal preference is 10/40 in cold weather, 20/50 hot weather.

Bel Ray 10w40, good stuff, it seems to last longer than the valvoline I was using before.

I thought it had to be a special mineral oil? I didn't think you were supposed to use normal oil?

Everything I have runs on Amsoil now, my 400 runs 20-25* cooler on it (by dipstick thermometer) and shifting was never smoother. Even the XR70 and TRX 90 with auto clutches shift better with it.

I use Valvoline 10W-40 motorcycle/atv oil year-round because Valvoline is a high-quality oil with a great reputation and my local auto store always has it in stock.

i run amsoil and love it.

i figure it's only 2 quarts and those 2 quarts lead a hard life in an xr so why not feed it the best.

truth be know any 20w-50 will work.

The Castrol GTX meets and exceeds the API standard as set forth in the manual, good stuff, just my personal preference.
