Bearing Spins In Hub

So whats the deal with the loose bearing on the rear hub? (drive side) I've read other posts about this too, I'm assuming this is fairly common, maybe Yamaha is not making a tight enough fit? I had to center punch the hub and locktite the bearing in for now.. I guess we'll see how long it holds up. Anyone know of what the exact cause is for this to happen?

On a side note my chain is also chewing up the inside of my frame, I've been running my chain to spec ever since I read about the hubs exploding.. maybe I should run it a little tighter? The chain is a DID X-ring and is not too think, but with the slack Yamaha calls for it allows enough play to rub the frame I guess. So I know my bearing spinning problem isn't from a chain run too tight. Any thoughts or comments?

The chain hitting the frame is most commonly caused by the rear wheel not being lined up straight. Don't use the lines on the axle blocks, measure from the swingarm pivot to the center of the axle.

What you did to the inside of the hub is a good idea, also make sure you use 640 Loctite sleeve and brg retainer. you should be set if the hub is nut too large, it looks ok in the pic. Mike

I had the same problem, looks like a mfg defect to me (too loose of a tolerance). I got mine replaced as i tried the same things you are and had no luck, as it loosened up after a few rides. Mine was an 06 450.

So you replaced it win an OEM hub and it was a tight fit? Did you loctite the bearing in your old hub and it still spun? I would think the loctite should work.. its pretty tough stuff.

The reason that solutions like dimpling, LocTite, and shimming don't cure this problem is because they don't address the cause. IMO, based on what I've seen here, the bearing pocket is not machined the wrong size, it becomes expanded by the loads placed on it because there was a run of hubs that were not as strong as they should have been. No method of tightening the fit will stop the pocket from expanding further and eventually failing.

Nice. Well now I'm wondering if this is one of those self detonating hubs :cool: I do have a spare new OEM hub I could swap it with, not sure if it would be from the same run or not. I was going to use it to build another wheel though.

Ride it some and reinspect the bearing fit. If it's loose again....

interesting. i had suspected such a defect after my hub broke and i started learning about all the other yami owners with broken hubs on their bikes too... i should send Yami my ebay bill for the $350 '08 wheel i replaced mine with.. :cool:

What I wonder is if all the hubs that have these spun bearings end up like your broken hub.

scary. i hope no one was injured when the failure occured


in the 1st. pic, some of the spokes look as if they were loose. it looks as if there was some back and forth movement against the spoke seat. loose spokes may have affected the alignment

Did you ever have a situation where your spokes loosened up badly? I have heard loose spokes if gone untreated, will pound the crap out of a hub and the bearing to bore fits from impact stresses......

Yes New oem was tight

Yes held for a ride or two, but i did not have as many dimples in the hub as you have

My spokes were tight guys. I check them every ride faithfully. There was once that the spokes came very loose.. when the bike was new they loosened badly for about 3 rides.. I had to constantly keep at them. The reason I noticed this now was I had play in the back wheel.. figured it was time for wheel bearings but they were fine, then I found that bad bearing hole.
