Best knee pads?

After reading all the bad things that can result from wearing knee braces, I've decided that since I have strong knees that don't need stabilizing, the best route to go is to just wear knee pads, as braces seem to do more harm than good for people that don't need the stability. I have had a pair of EVS knee braces for a while, and am going to get some knee pads now. I have a pair of EVS Pastrana series knee pads, and they seem very comfortable, but they're HOT HOT HOT, especially here in Florida! What is everybody using right now for knee protection? What seems to be the best for comfort/ protection?

I have the evs glider lites. THey are not noticable and don't rub the back of my knees raw. I mainly use them because before I would always rub the skin off the insides of my knees from squeezing the bike.

I've been using the 661 Richochet knee guards. Very protective, not overly hot, good comfort and did I mention protective? Good stuff.

I have the Thor Force knee guard. They are absolutely amazing. I had ACL Reconstruction, meniscectomy, and LCL reconstruction in my left knee but I didn't want to go to the full on knee brace either.

I got the Forces for $90 and at first I was a little worried about whether I would like them or not. One ride later and I would never ride my bike again without them. They give me so much more securtiy when I'm riding I can't believe it. They have an awesome neoprene strapping system that really gives a decent amount of support too. The hinged knee makes them super easy to get around in and move on the bike also.

I would reccommend them to anyone looking for a really good "almost" brace.

I have the same ones, used them for almost 2 years. They hold up well. They have the neoprene liner that wraps around your calf and thigh before the straps go over. This has eliminated chaffing or rubbing at the back of the knee. I guess they could be a bit hotter but I use them when I travel to Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska to race in the summer and have not noticed them being uncomfortably hot. They stay put and on impacts have been a huge benefit for patella protection ect. Give em a look, I paid about $70 for em.

Back to the pad question:

I've been using the Thor Quadrant's for well over a year, and am pretty happy with them-the don't strap to the knee, but the calf area (over your MX socks) and the knee pad kinda "floats" (there is a couple wide straps that keeps the shin from the plastic) and is LH and RH specific, with a doughnut that keeps them centered over the kneecap and gives an extra padding for shock absorbtion.

I know mine have repaid the $25 cost on the first day of ownership in bruises and bumps alone.

I'd give them a 8 out of 10 for a rating.

I second these as well. I have been using the Thor Force for over a year now and they are working GREAT. Check the screws when they are new and go ride!

Im also looking for an almost brace..Ive had my ACL replaced and would like a little support. I know there is no evidence that any of them prevent injury, Im just looking for good support and the idea of a broken femur scares me much worse than the ACL recovery Im doing now...Has anyone looked at the EVS RS7 or SX01? http://www.evs-sports.com/ They seem to be made to give support and dont look like they are stiff enough to get the femur..Any thoughts?

Where's the scientific evidence to support the rumors that braces break legs. How can you even mention braces like the evs visions in the same sentence as the web, or the cell. Surely they react differently to forces in different circumstances. The web is also designed to break up on extreme impacts in order to absorb impact.

It's utter BS to say that you have to choose between a broken femur and a busted knee.

If I too might be so unscientific, I'd say generally choose between 5 knee repairs and 1 fracture? Defininately not 1 to 1.

Take a look on the flipside of that coin-Where's the scientific evidence to support that knee braces do work? Dr Mark is in the process of gathering TT members to do a study regarding level of injury on knee brace vs no brace, mostly because every study out there has been done/funded by the brace mfgr's.

A brace that is designed to break when force is applied kinda defeats the purpose, if you ask me.

It's not the broken leg vs torn ligament argument that carries any water, it's the OR time vs pine box time.

I'd rather keep my weight down and my flexibility and strength around the joints up and have zero knee surgeries. anyways, there is no actual scientific evidence that knee braces do a darned thing for protecting your knee ligaments.

I've been happy with a variety of cheap knee pads. I like the $20 evs ones I have now, but i'd really be happy if they wrapped another inch around the sides. I have yet to see any knee pad that gave enoug protection on the side. I whacked my knee pretty good, right on the inside of the joint, when i caught on a rut and highsided, riding by myself in the nevada backcountry.

Those thor kneeguards look pretty nice. they provide a little impact protection right above the knee too, and seem like they wouldn't rub the way some pads do.

I've been very happy with the Thor's-they do wrap around the side and top of the knee a bit...nothings every perfect, but pretty good. I have never had a chafing problem wearing them.

Minibikedad I wear mine on the inside of my pants with the shin portion tucked inside my riding boots, both my baggies and in the boot styles pants.
