Having a KTM... I do not have a big problem getting hands/filter in and out and do not have a screw retaining it either.

I wear latex gloves when working on it so the oil and grease don't get all over, just pull gloves off once filter is in or out.

I also would recommend a filter that does not require a bunch of grease to seal. I use Moose filters and they have a nice dense foam base that does not require grease... although I do put on a small amount. They sell seperate base gaskets to eliminate the need for grease also.

As far as getting the filter out without dirt falling into the air boot... tip the bike on its side and pull the filter, the dirt will not fall into the boot.

THANKS for a quick reply

Yeah KTM's are nice and user friendly. My younger brother raced them for almost 10 years 125's-450's as he grew....the bike in general were super easy to work with.
After a day of riding, when you do the filter...intake tube always clean?? I know on most other bikes it's bound to have some dirt in there (grease seals don't always work like the were intended)

I don't use any grease at all, on my ktm, husaberg, or dr650, often race in extremely ridiculously dusty conditions and I have never had any dirt visible on the intake. I typically wipe it with a clean papertowel just to check.

I remove my filter prior to cleaning the bike, just about every time I ride. If I wash it with the filter on, it gets wet. I have never had any dirt in my boot. I remove the filter, stuff a rag down in the boot, and put on a cover piece that is retained with the stock retainer. No problems yet. I only tip the bike if it looks like a lot of debris is in the area, it is a little difficult to work under there with out being able to see what you are doing... but it does work.

About every 3rd or 4th filter change I manage to start bleeding. Suzuki boxes have a lot of sharp edges!

Latex gloves are really the key. That air filter oil feels like it never comes off you.

I always remove my filter, UNI FILTER, and use carb cleaner to clean the inside of the air box. Of course I use the blue chemical latex glove you can buy at home depot of lowes. They are resistant to to carb cleaner. Once you clean the airbox out, clean the filter out, oil, and out it in. As far as not getting dirt in the box, When you pull off the filter, carefully put a clean rag in the air boot, so dirt wont fall in there. They are just a pain in the butt any way you look at it.

I spray some W-D on a parer towel to wipe out the air box ware latex gloves and use NO-TOIL , clean up is easy before it dry's.
